Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump After Hours

Former US president Donald Trump was rushed off stage during a rally in Pennsylvania after a gunman fired multiple rounds from an "elevated position" a few hours ago.

Trump said a bullet pierced the "upper part" of his right ear, in a post on social media.

One person was killed and two others injured according to law enforcement.

The FBI has identified the suspected gunman, who was shot and killed by the Secret Service, as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

At an earlier press conference, FBI field officer Kevin Rojek confirmed that the incident was being treated as an assassination attempt.

Law enforcement officers were pressed on the response time to the gunman. State police said it's "too early" to determine what happened as "everything unfolded very quickly".

State police said they're following up on reports that a witness saw the shooter on the roof.

No matter what you think of Donald Trump this is shocking news to wake up to this morning.

Terrible event but....

Things couldn't have worked out better for Trump if he'd arranged for someone to pull the trigger himself.

He's now odds on to win another term as President and millions of Americans see him as a hero. And Biden and the mainstream media are getting blamed for the way Trump is portrayed in America.

• One or more secret service agents then opened fire on a potential suspect
• Police units then sealed off the area immediately
• A witness saw a man running from the bushes and entering a black Nissan car
• Police then pulled over the black Nissan and the man was detained
• An AK-47 style rifle with a scope was recovered from a bush where the suspect was seen, along with two backpacks and a GoPro camera
