Sir Keir Starmer has announced he is stepping down as Prime Minister.⁠

The Labour leader had faced growing pressure over his position in recent weeks, with reports of mounting concern inside the party and speculation over who could replace him.⁠

In a statement outside Downing Street, Starmer said every decision he made in office had been about "putting the country first" as he confirmed he would be stepping aside.

His departure follows growing pressure from within Labour, with reports suggesting around 100 MPs had called for him to go.

Labour is expected to begin the process of choosing a new leader, with a transition potentially taking place later this year.

Time for the next one to come in saying they're going to do this and that and have to back track cause it's not possible for one reason or another.

Can we afford to improve our defences quickly?
Can we really stop or dramatically reduce immigration?
Can we actually go against the US publicly like a lot of people want?

I'm not so sure we can and if we do are we ready to take a hit on what will have t drop?

I'm a casual political viewer, try and stay on top of things but not into anything deep so if anyone can enlighten me that'd be great.

Starmer is largely competent but has been dragged into a desire to be popular, despite this not being necessary this early in a Parliament. He could and should have stuck to his guns on stuff like taxation, as there is plenty of time until the next General Election for him to prove he was right (or otherwise). Otherwise, he lacks charisma, a bit like John Major (who was also competent, bar the rail privatisation decision). Burnham has charisma, almost the "man you'd have a pint with in the pub" as Farage pushes, so he may do better, but his policies are, in practice, unlikely to be wildly different.

The Starmer Government actually has done some good but it's mired with scandals, what is needed until the next GE is boring politics where things get done with a few grumbles.
