The post is vague and low-effort, providing no substantial information or insight about Atomfall. It would benefit from more detail and context regarding why it looks interesting.

I'm going to keep an eye on this one. It looks interesting.

Atomfall caught everybody's attention when it was announced earlier this year. Fallout comparisons were quick to follow, but the survival-action game's setting in a quarantine zone in Northern England gives it its own bizarre, distinctive twist.

Here's everything we know about Atomfall so far!

When is Atomfall coming out?
Atomfall was announced only this year, but while there's no specific release date yet, Rebellion has now narrowed down its release window to March 2025.

What platforms is Atomfall coming to?
Atomfall will launch for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Windows PC, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Atomfall is one of the big Xbox Game Pass titles set to arrive early next year, and will join the service as a day-one addition.

What is the story and setting for Atomfall?
According to Rebellion, Atomfall is "inspired by the real-life events" of the 1957 Windscale nuclear disaster, and takes place five years later, exploring an alternate history in the game's fictional version of a post-apocalyptic-style quarantine zone. The game is set in the North of England, around the Lake District — one trailer takes place in the village of Wyndham, but we'll be roaming about the countryside too.

A lot of the game's mystery revolves around the disaster and what happened afterwards, with the devs explaining that "to get to the bottom of what happened at Windscale, you will need to navigate military encampments, delve through abandoned bunkers below ground, and risk your life in Pagan ruins."

On top of this, you'll be dealing with "the host of eccentric characters and cryptic organisations that inhabit the quarantine zone. These individuals have been cut off from the outside world for years and left to their own devices, so are anything but normal." The trailer shows us a fair few wacky characters ready to barter or hanging around at the pub, but less-friendly elements of the quarantine zone include bandits, cultists, and, of course, whatever that mutant thing is that pops up at the end of the Gamescom trailer.

There's also a military presence to contend with. "In response to the disaster, the army has been sent in to create and maintain a quarantine zone, Rebellion says. "This response force is known as 'Protocol'. They are the ones tasked with keeping people safe — but after five years, their outlook has soured. You will learn more about Protocol as you interact with them — and the people they seek to control — over the course of the game. Are they a force for good, keeping people safe? Are they a force of oppression, making life harder for those in the quarantine zone? Or is there more going on than meets the eye?" Protocol are backed up by some serious robot power, with the robots themselves, who are "programmed to do everything necessary to maintain the quarantine," set up as some of the strongest enemies you can engage with.

What type of game is Atomfall?
Atomfall is a single-player survival-action game. Its setting in an isolated, half-abandoned, almost post-apocalyptic quarantine zone mean scavenging, bartering, crafting and, of course, combat, will be key.

The Gamescom trailer gives some info on the story and setting.

The Official Xbox Podcast then brought a more in-depth deep dive on Atomfall, going over the gameplay and more.

We've not really heard too much about this since it was announced. To me, it looks like a cross between the later Fallout games and the Metro franchise. If it turns out that way it should be a hit.

Atomfall, the uniquely British survival game set in a post-apocalyptic 1950s England, has made waves since its release in March. Developed by Rebellion, the game was reported to be "immediately profitable," which is impressive for any new IP.

One of the key factors behind its success is its availability on Xbox Game Pass, which Rebellion's CEO, Jason Kingsley, highlighted in a recent interview. He mentioned that the Game Pass model "does mitigate risk" and ensures a steady income for developers. This has likely contributed to Atomfall's rapid recovery of its development costs, even for those who played it through the subscription service.

Rebellion is not just resting on its laurels, though. In addition to plans for downloadable content (DLC), discussions about a sequel or even spin-off games are already underway. Kingsley expressed the studio's ambition to continue developing engaging games and hinted at exciting future developments for Atomfall.

Here are some notable achievements and plans for Atomfall:
  • Immediate Profitability: The game recouped development costs quickly.
  • DLC on the Horizon: Rebellion is planning additional content to expand the game.
  • Sequel Discussions: Talks about sequels and spin-offs are in progress.
  • Record-Breaking Launch: Atomfall became Rebellion's "most successful launch" with over 1.5 million players.
  • Unique Gameplay Elements: Players have enjoyed quirky British-themed gameplay, including consuming 4 million pasties and 300,000 cups of tea in-game.
If you're curious about Atomfall, it's worth checking out the reviews. It has been noted that while the game may have a difficult start, it offers a compelling narrative worth exploring.

They're dropping their first expansion called Wicked Isle next week!

It's set to take us to this creepy place called Midsummer Island, which apparently has a bit of a folk horror vibe. I'm all for that kind of theme, especially if they do it right and don't just recycle old tropes.

The head of design at Rebellion, Ben Fisher, mentioned that the island's got a crazy level of infection going on, thanks to its proximity to the Windscale Atom Plant. That means we'll be fighting some new enemies like pirate bandits and infected druids. We'll also get some cool new weapons to battle them with, including a blunderbuss shotgun, a classic cutlass, and a beekeeper's staff.

Here's a sneak peek at the gameplay trailer if you wanna check it out:

I've put in about ten hours, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Some people claim the average playthrough is around 25 hours. I think that's a decent return. It shows that the game encourages you to explore rather than just rushing through.

The investigation system is pretty cool. Instead of following a strict mission structure, you can pick up clues and decide what to chase after. It feels more rewarding to discover things on your own rather than just following a map marker.

The graphics are decent, too. The game runs well even on lower-end hardware, which is a nice touch. Plus, exploring the different regions is a blast. There are tons of hidden paths and secrets, making it feel like you're on a real adventure.

If you're looking for a game that combines light combat with some solid mystery-solving, give Atomfall a shot. It's not perfect, but it definitely has its moments. Plus, there's something satisfying about rummaging through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic world.

Atomfall is making the leap from video game to television! This unique game, which infuses a British perspective into the survival genre, is actually inspired by the Windscale disaster of 1957 – a real-life event that stands as the worst nuclear accident in the UK's history.

The fact that a video game is being adapted for TV is becoming more common, but Atomfall brings something special to the table. Its British roots and the chilling backdrop of a nuclear fallout offer a rich narrative potential that could resonate well with audiences. The blend of thrilling survival elements with real historical context might just strike a chord, prompting discussions about nuclear safety and environmental awareness in our current times.

While details on the cast and crew are still under wraps, it's exciting to imagine how the game's mechanics and story will be adapted for the screen. Will we see the same gameplay elements reimagined, or will the series take a more narrative-driven approach? Only time will tell!
