The post presents a clear and engaging overview of Borderlands 4, effectively capturing the community's interest with relevant context about the franchise's previous entries and current expectations.

See if you have what it takes to go down in history as a legendary Vault Hunter as you search for secret alien treasure, blasting everything in sight.

After lacklustre sales of spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a mixed response to New Tales from the Borderlands and the widespread panning of the Borderlands film, it's finally time for Gearbox's flagship franchise to prove its mettle, once and for all, with a proper new entry.

Can the series recapture its heyday with a fully open world set on a fresh planet and an all-new cast?

Earlier this week, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stirred up controversy with a response to a potential Borderlands 4 buyer expressing concern over a possible price tag upwards of £70. Pitchford remarked that "real fans" would find a way to purchase the game regardless of cost, a comment that was received with considerable backlash.

In an effort to clarify his stance, Pitchford released a follow-up statement, stating, "If you want the truth, here it is," and shared a video of a prior interview where he admitted uncertainty about the game's retail price. He emphasised the complexities of the current gaming market, explaining that while many consumers are sensitive to rising prices, game development costs are surging due to various factors, including increased budgets and retail tariffs.

Pitchford revealed that Borderlands 4 boasts more than double the development budget of its predecessor, Borderlands 3. He reassured fans that the team aims to make the game accessible to everyone, stating, "We want to make it as easy as possible for everybody to enjoy what we are creating." He also acknowledged the support from fans, attributing the higher budget to their backing of previous games.

Ultimately, Pitchford concluded that the final price will be determined by the publishing house and assured fans that, regardless of the cost, the upcoming instalment promises to be worth it.

Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, introducing four new Vault Hunters and a new enemy faction known as the Rippers.

As we gear up for the release of Borderlands 4 this September, there's some news regarding the game's pricing and special editions from Take-Two.

  • Super Deluxe Edition: £119.99, which adds the Ornate Order Pack and Vault Hunter Pack featuring additional story content and cosmetics.
What's Included in the Editions?

Community Engagement and Free Updates
Gearbox has also mentioned that they plan to roll out plenty of free updates after launch to incorporate community feedback and balance the game. They teased that there will be some sizable free content drops we can expect in the future, though they haven't gone into specifics just yet.

Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will feature a photo mode in a post-launch update. This news, shared by creative director Graeme Timmins on social media, highlights that while players will not have access to this feature at the game's launch on September 12, it has always been part of the developers' plans.

Timmins explained that the decision to delay the photo mode was made to prioritise core gameplay elements that significantly enhance the player experience. He stated, "I had us prioritise polishing some other elements, more core to the moment-to-moment experience." This focus on quality of life improvements reflects a commitment to delivering a polished game, rather than rushing to include every feature at launch.

Additionally, the game will not include the auto-sell feature that was present in Borderlands 3. Instead, players will have the option to mark unwanted loot as "Junk," which they can later sell at vendors. This decision is aimed at preserving the value of loot from the outset of the game. Timmins noted, "I don't want to add a feature that kind of devalues our amazing loot."

I picked this up for Xbox and it's unplayable for me. For whatever reason (despite having played the first 3), this game gives me extreme motion sickness after a short period of time. And apparently, I'm not alone, as Reddit is bitching about it too. The console version lacks FOV adjustment, even though it's available on PC.

Gearbox has rolled out the September 18th Title Update for Borderlands 4, with a focus on enhancing game stability rather than performance tweaks. This patch, approximately 800MB in size, introduces several important fixes aimed at reducing crashes related to animation states, audio, and collision checks, along with addressing various GPU-related issues.

Key highlights from the update include:

Stability Improvements:
  • Resolved crashes linked to animation states and audio.
  • Fixed issues related to GPU crashes for a smoother gaming experience.
Mission and Gameplay Fixes:
  • Addressed a progression blocker in the "Talk to Zadra" mission, where the objective could fail if players exited mid-dialogue.
  • Resolved a bug where the Reward Centre would stop functioning after claiming Gilded Glory Pack rewards.
  • Updated loot pools to ensure Gilded Glory Pack guns do not appear in standard chests.
Despite some previous comments from Randy Pitchford about performance concerns, Gearbox has acknowledged ongoing performance issues and has prioritised addressing them for future updates.

Technical issues and Randy Pitchford's weirdness aside, they seem to have improved a lot from Borderlands 3, which is good to hear. These aren't games I look forward to, but they can be a good light time. I quite enjoyed Tiny Tina's Wonderland.

In the wake of its release, Borderlands 4 has garnered significant attention, not only for its gameplay but also for its impressive sales figures. According to recent data from Alinea Analytics, the game has attracted over 2.5 million players across all platforms, resulting in revenues exceeding $150 million for its publisher, Take-Two Interactive. Notably, $80 million of this revenue has come from Steam, which has seen more than 300,000 concurrent players since launch.

Despite some criticism regarding performance issues on both console and PC platforms, the demand for the game appears robust, particularly given the six-year gap since the last instalment, Borderlands 3. The positive critical reception appears to have bolstered player interest, and there is hope that ongoing patches will enhance the overall gaming experience in the weeks to come.

It will be interesting to see how the developers respond to feedback and continue to improve the game, especially regarding any performance setbacks they may have encountered.

Borderlands 4 has hit the gaming world with a bang, and despite my general scepticism towards looter-shooters, I find myself pleasantly surprised by Gearbox's latest offering. As a long-time fan, I can't help but appreciate the charm that permeates this cartoonish escapade.
  • Gameplay: 9.5/10 – The mechanics are responsive and addictive.
  • Graphics: 9/10 – A visually stunning experience with a strong art direction.
  • Audio: 8.5/10 – The soundtrack enhances the atmosphere significantly.
  • Performance: 8/10 – Generally runs smoothly, though occasional bugs are present.
Highlights:
  • Expansive world filled with opportunities for exploration.
  • Top-notch combat mechanics.
  • High replayability enhances long-term enjoyment.
Drawbacks:
  • Issues with story pacing can detract from the experience.
  • Minor bugs and glitches may interrupt gameplay.
In conclusion, while Borderlands 4 has its shortcomings, the overall experience is one that fans of the franchise will likely enjoy. The blend of fun gameplay, vibrant graphics, and engaging sound design makes it a worthy addition to the series.
