Conspiracy Theories After Hours

Interesting show on the radio right now discussing conspiracy theories and how so people are getting lost down the rabbit hole.

One woman just been on saying that her husband thinks covid is a hoax and refuses to wear a facemask on public transport (I thought you had to?). Some strange folk about.

I overheard the woman next door to me telling one of the neighbours that it was all a load of rubbish, they're just putting every death down to COVID. Her evidence was that she knew someone who she had been speaking to, who knew someone who had died (nothing to do with COVID), and her friend had said 'they will probably put it down to COVID'.

It's difficult to know which evidence should carry more weight - the 60,000 plus excess deaths or her friend in Scotland saying something might happen.

The problem is not just conspiracy theories as such though - people can just find validation for any ridiculous opinion based on a few nutcases on the internet, so they can crack on with their world view, even when all of the evidence is against it.

Lack of attention to detail, people only glance at headlines without reading the whole article. Disbelieve experts with PhDs but hang on every word of someone on Facebook who studied at the University of Life.

I find anti-vaxxers the worst, they get totally swallowed up by the bogus science and thereafter refuse any form of logic.

I once heard one state that you can't believe everything you read in books and science a few moments before trying to use made-up science to prove their point.

Coronavirus emerges at the same time as 5G masts are being erected, logical assumption to a conspiracy freak is that 5G masts spread COVID-19 (no examination of how this could possibly happen, naturally). Next logical assumption is that because the government hasn't mentioned it, they must be orchestrating it to exert population control! And The Sheeple just allow themselves to be manipulated!

That's how easy it is.
