I bought this a few months ago and haven't really played it much yet.

I'm only about two hours in or so and really enjoying it. The game is gorgeous and I love the story and setting. Only received one of my additional powers so far.

Anyone playing/played it?

Control's developer Remedy and publisher 505 Games have revealed an "ultimate edition" of Control, which includes the base game along with the two DLC expansions. The ultimate edition launches on August 27 on Steam, the same day as the second expansion, Awe, which features Alan Wake. It launches on September 10 for PS4, Xbox One, and on the Epic Game Store.

If you buy the ultimate edition for current-gen systems, you can upgrade the game for free when the PS5 and Xbox Series X systems are available. However, if you already bought the standard version of Control and its expansions, you don't get the upgrade. You need to re-purchase the ultimate edition (which costs £40) in order to take advantage of the next-gen enhancements.

Remedy and 505 Games did not specify the reasons, technical or otherwise, that the upgrade is not being offered to existing owners. The announcement only says: "The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition."

At a time when high-profile games like Cyberpunk 2077 (along with Xbox's whole Smart Delivery program) are standardizing cross-generation purchases, this move is surprising and disappointing – especially given the lack of meaningful new content included in the ultimate edition.

Not that this is acceptable or anything - indeed, it's a pretty cheeky move - but I'd say 505 Games probably had more to do with this decision than Remedy.

At the very least those who've picked up the expansions separately should be entitled to the upgrade. Would be great if the core game owners got it too, but certainly for those who own everything that's in the ultimate edition should get the next-gen version, particularly when the current-gen version was quite shaky.

Here's a look at the first 15 minutes of the AWE expansion for Control.

This week, Remedy showed off the Control expansion AWE in a live stream. You can watch the first 15 minutes of the upcoming content below.

AWE takes place in the abandoned Investigations Sector in the Oldest House. In it, you will go up against Alan Wake's darkness creatures and other enemies. You will explore Altered World Events (AWE) to take the sector back.

Here's the blurb:

The Bureau studied its most dangerous Altered World Events in this lost sector. The records were sealed, the objects contained, and their powers abandoned. Now, the sector is breached and the objects are loose.

The content also brings Surge to the Service Weapon which fires sticky grenades. Arcade machines will allow you to access modes such as horde and time trial.

AWE comes to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 27. It will also be included with the Ultimate Edition which arrives on Steam the same day.

I finished the AWE expansion last night. The new area was interesting but I haven't played Alan Wake so a lot of the lore there was lost on me.

The same strengths and weakness from the main game carry over. Great level design/lore etc but I never liked the boss fights. They just spam you with large amounts of annoying enemies over and over.

The arcade machine letting you replay the maze was cool, I felt a bit overpowered playing through it again, blazed through it with just the basic form of the service weapon.

Recently, Remedy Entertainment released a significant update for Control Ultimate Edition on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. This patch introduces multiple enhancements that elevate the gaming experience, including:
  • Support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and 120Hz displays, available on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S.
  • Removal of frame rate limits in Quality and Performance Modes for all consoles, except Series S which only received this for Performance Mode.
  • New graphics settings including HDR support, improved texture filtering, and enhanced screen space reflections (PSSR) specifically for PS5 Pro.
  • Three new outfits that were previously exclusive to pre-orders are now available to all players.
  • A new mission featuring Dr. Yoshimi Tokui, voiced by Hideo Kojima, is now accessible to all players.
While the introduction of PSSR can slightly impact performance, players have the option to disable it if they prefer the original visual style of the game.

This update aligns with Remedy's commitment to continuously improve Control, ensuring that players enjoy the best possible experience on their consoles.
