Manchester United legend Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84, his family have announced.

The footballer, who announced in 2021 he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, was United's third highest goal scorer of all time, behind Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.

He scored 237 goals in 404 appearance, and formed part of the group known lovlingly as the "Holy Trinity", comprising of Sir Bobby and George Best, which saw them secure a European Cup, the FA Cup and two English titles.

Law's family said in a statement: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. "We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. "We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."

The striker's talents were recognised worldwide, with him winning the Ballon d'Or in 1964.

Law's career also saw him play for Huddersfield, Torino and Manchester City and he managed to score 30 goals in 55 appearances for Scotland.

After being diagnosed with Alzheimers, Law spoke publicly of the condition and said: "This will not be an easy journey especially for the people who love you the most.

"I know the road ahead will be hard, demanding, painful and ever changing and so ask for understanding and patience.

"I recognise how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don't want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.

"I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don't understand and I hate the thought of that right now."

A giant of the game. Along with Best and Charlton they were a formidable force for Manchester United.

One of the greats, one of my dad's favourite players.

Tom

So sad. I was listening to a podcast about him the other day. A genuine legend of football has left us

Too young to see him play, I read his autobiography as a young teen and saw many clips of his ability. He was a true legend and a genuine, humble man. Rest well.

Tremendous player and an iconic figure. Not many players from that era left now.

Goes down as one of the all-time footballing greats who will never be forgotten. He made goalscoring look easy, such a natural finisher. How Utd and Scotland could use his abilities at the present time. What a player.
