As someone who very publicly hates unnecessary remakes of films they should have left well alone, I do think there are films that deserve a remake. This is especially if they made a mess of the original film and it deserves a proper version, but there are other reasons.
Here's one: The Sicilian. Based on a novel by Mario Puzo, the original book being better IMHO than his book of The Godfather and a tremendous story. It concerns the real-life Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliani who became a kind of Robin Hood figure after the War - using the black market to supply food to people in Sicily who would starve otherwise, refusing to bow down either to the Mafia, the Church or the corrupt authorities. He was outgunned and maybe never stood a chance but he fought a hell of a battle against the powers that be.
The film had the misfortune of being directed by the overrated and unhinged Michael Cimino, with a cast of people who look about as Italian as Jimmy Krankie and is an absolute shambles. Christopher Lambert plays a Sicilian bandit with predictably shite results.
This definitely deserves a proper remake with a more credible cast and a director who knows what they're doing.
