Below, Sports Interactive have detailed some of the key new features in FM 2023

The headline features for Football Manager 2023 have been revealed including changes to Recruitment and the Match Engine, new Supporter Confidence and Dynamic Manager Timeline features, and the arrival of the UEFA Club Competitions licence.

RECRUITMENT REVAMP

To better understand the evolution of the recruitment process, we have had extensive conversations with leading Directors of Football, Data Analysts, Scouts and Managers over the last few years. All of those discussions have helped guide our changes to recruitment for FM 2023, and they fall into four categories: Squad Planner and Experience Matrix, Scouting, Agents and Recruitment Meetings.

MATCH AI AND ANIMATION

One of the main focuses of our Match team was to overhaul the logic powering our AI managers, making them more intelligent than ever before. There have also been a significant number of updates to our Player Decision and Match Engine AI across the pitch, while improvements to our animation engine and changes to Team Instructions ensure FM23 is as close to real life as possible.

OFFICIAL UEFA CLUB COMPETITIONS

This is more than just a standard licence. For the first time in Football Manager history, we are able to include fully licensed UEFA Club Competitions, making those Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights feel even more special. When approaching all of the upgrades, enhancements and functionality related to UEFA's licensed assets, our team aimed to recreate the UEFA look and feel, and the excitement generated by those big competitions.

SUPPORTER CONFIDENCE

We wanted to amplify the importance of fans in the game. By introducing Supporter Profiles, we are able to provide a snapshot of your club's fanbase. Elsewhere, the newly-included Supporter Confidence will sit alongside your Board Confidence, and will reflect the current mood among the fans. This will help to keep tabs on the supporters' opinion of you, and whether you're the right person for the job.

DYNAMIC MANAGER TIMELINE

Whether you've taken a team from the lower leagues to cup glory over many seasons, or you've just fought off relegation in your first campaign, we know just how important your Football Manager save is. For FM23, we've continued that theme by introducing the Dynamic Manager Timeline – a new way of showcasing and tracking the achievements and milestones of your career.

If nothing else I'm learning how the new Champions League format will work.
I like it - it really makes every game count and the group stage feels so intense. To make the top 8 is great, but also the knockouts for teams 9-24 means there are no longer meaningless matches. The only problem I had was that some teams really had much easier fixtures in these initial 8 league games, but UEFA was mafia and will stay mafia so it only adds to the charm. It's an enjoyable format and I'm looking forward to it.

Started a journeyman type save.

Started with Oxford City in the National League South, got them promoted with a 1st place finish. Resigned and took over a mid-table Forest Green side in League 1. Sitting top of the league in December.

Just got hammered by Fleetwood 6-2 in the Carabao Cup 3rd round though.

Is neural network AI a possible avenue for future management games? Though I do wonder if the non-player AI managed teams will make too many smart decisions and render the game brutally difficult.

I don't think it is, it goes against their philosophy of the game having to be able to run on a toaster.

I feel the problem with the long term squad building could be solved without using any AI approach by just pure game logic and making the AI not just make selections and buy choices based on the reputation of players. It would already help if AI managers could be prevented from going silly a couple of seasons in and playing CBs as WBs or AMs as DMs.

Gone up to the Championship. Interestingly Everton were relegated in the first season and Rooney took over and led them to the Championship title

What's with the weird CL format that comes in?

Qualified for the CL with Sunderland in 2026 and it is some kind of bloated league. Caught me off guard.

Got wonderkids galore. Tresoldi, Moukoko, Endrick, JOBE Bellingham. You have to love it.

Does anyone else find themselves always at war fighting against their team?

I think I have been the manager of Dortmund for 8 months and have already broken 100 promises, they completely hate my guts. The main reason for broken promises and contract negotiations is mainly because everyone who wants a new contract asking for stupid stuff, players wanting to get out on loan and turning down loan offers and being angry about me not accepting the "fringe player" status offers.

Players train like a bunch of lazy bums but oh dear are they angry if I demand they train properly, same goes for players getting low training ratings in a row, how dare I criticise them

Oh and I can't keep this squad fit, a starter gets injured on average every 2 weeks, and they are all injury prone as hell, it feels like I have to completely change the squad to ever achieve anything with these numpties

On top of that my DoF is completely useless, he never managed to negotiate a contract with any player ever. I'm on the verge of just sacking him and saving his wages, useless :poop:

Oh yeah, always. Doesn't matter the level of your league, the level of your team players constantly moan.

How is it reasonable that you ask for a new contract after just 1 season and you still have 4 years left on your £200k/w contract? Get fecked.

And all the dialogue is so passive-aggressive too. Like players saying have you been to the optics when you criticize their performance or the board asking you to not waste their time when you ask to study for coaching qualifications.

I find it quite funny how badly Guardiola and Klopp are doing in my game.

Guardiola got sacked in 2024 by City, was hired by Spain and sacked 2 years later after a series of bad results, with no trophy won. After that he gets hired by RB Leipzig, doesn't even last until the end of the year and gets sacked for losing the confidence of the dressing room. In December 2027 he gets hired by Liverpool who have just sacked Klopp for turning them into a midtable team. Guardiola doesn't even last 12 months before getting sacked due to being shite. Now in 2029, he got hired by Napoli, who are Italian champions, let's see how long he will last this time.

Klopp lasted longer but wasn't all that successful anymore, only winning one more Carabao Cup in 2026. In November 2027 he gets sacked after the team is firmly embedded in the PL midtable by then. In June 2028 he gets hired by Real Madrid, gets sacked at the end of the season, finishes 4th and wins no trophies. Now he got hired by Germany as a national team manager, let's see if he does better there.

I've started as Seaham Red Star (downloaded database) and it's the lowest league I've ever been in. Can't really fault the realism of drawing 3-3 with Notts County in a pre-season friendly to boost the finances.
