Il Capolavoro Appassimento. I was given this by a house guest, not one I'd normally pick up myself. I was pleasantly surprised by this - nice deep ruby colour, lot of sweet cherries balanced by some peppery spice. Very decent.

Aldi's Limoux Chardonnay from Les Domaines Paul Mas Astélia in the Languedoc-Roussillon is one of my regular favourites.

I think it's about £12 and has a lovely "full-body, nice acidity and buttery oak". It's really reminiscent of a quality Burgundy but much cheaper

Wine is probably the only alcohol I consume with any regularity (and even it is mostly a vacation treat now). I am partial to reds but have had some whites I enjoyed, too. I really like the Spanish red we had at a resort in Cancun years ago (I had it with dinner most nights) but the picture I took of label seems to have been mislaid so I don't even know what it was now. I took the picture thinking to see if it was available through LCBO (our government booze monopoly).

I had some friends over at the weekend who travel a lot to South Africa and love South African wine so I tried to play to the crowd and picked up a bottle of Paul de Villiers Shiraz from Curious Wines.

I really enjoyed it, some really nice dark fruits big solid body with some very well balanced spice and a finish that seems to go on and on. This was a massive hit with our guests too. Comes in at £16.99 from Curious and I'd recommend it.

Was in Aldi this evening picking up some stuff for dinner, when I saw a Colombard blend on the shelf for £8. I love Colombard as I think it makes great, crisp whites, that are perfect food wines.

This wine, Vue Sur Mer Cotes de Thau, is a blend of local Terret Bourret, Piquepoul and Colombard. I must say that I'm really impressed by it for £8. It's got a decent amount of body and length, with lots of citrus and apples.

Another Aldi wine buy. We had a bottle of "O Grande", a red blend from Chile. Very intense with oodles of rich berries, amazing for £7.49

Currently enjoying a Dona Paula Los Cardos Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice and fruity and goes down very well.

It's making me want to try their Malbec next time.

Just opened bottle of Julia Florista Vinho Tinto. Smooth, fruity and at only £8 means it's very enjoyable for me.

Tesco Finest Cotes De Gascogne £9 - a blend of Colombard and Gros Manseng. Mild apple and lemon flavours. It went well with the lemon chicken we had for dinner. I imagine would also work with lightly seasoned fish, seafood, pork or cheeses such as brie.

At present, I enjoy a Zweigelt, a red wine from Austria.
