Mafia: The Old Country
Uncover the origins of organised crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily. Fight to survive as Enzo Favara and prove your worth to the Cosa Nostra in this immersive third-person action-adventure set during a dangerous, unforgiving era.

Enzo will do anything for a better life. After a brutal childhood of forced labour, he's ready to risk everything to become a man of honour in the Torrisi crime family.

His oath to the Cosa Nostra, with all the power, temptation, and hardship it entails, is a burning reminder of this simple truth:

Family Takes Sacrifice.

This thrilling narrative is brought to life by stunning visuals, cinematic storytelling, and the authentic realism that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for. Enzo's story unfolds in a time when skill with a stiletto blade was a deadly asset, a lupara sawed-off shotgun was a go-to firearm, murderous vendettas raged for decades, and mafiosi patrolled their protection rackets on foot, horseback, or behind the wheel of turn-of-the-century motorcars.

Mafia: The Old Country presents a fascinating blend of cinematic storytelling, rich visuals, and nuanced character performances. Despite its design trappings feeling somewhat dated, the game offers an engaging experience that is well worth the investment of time.

One of the key aspects of Mafia: The Old Country is its concise narrative structure. This title is part of a trend known as "truncated triple-A" releases: games that possess big-budget ambitions but are not overly long, aiming to provide a complete story in a more manageable timeframe. Clocking in at under 15 hours, this game tells its story effectively without overstaying its welcome, which is a refreshing change in an era where many titles demand extensive playtime.

Unlike its predecessor, Mafia 3, which was characterised by a sprawling open world and a convoluted narrative, The Old Country opts for a more focused approach. It strips away the excess and instead delivers a narrative that captivates through its simplicity. The game is set in a slice of Sicily, offering a beautifully rendered backdrop for the story, though it stops short of being a fully open world. Players can drive around during specific segments, but the absence of police patrols or side activities allows for a more streamlined experience.

The combat mechanics also reflect this simplicity. Players engage in combat using knives and guns, emphasising stealth and strategic approaches instead of hand-to-hand fighting. This design choice aligns well with the game's themes, focusing on the cunning and treachery associated with the mafia lifestyle.

At the heart of Mafia: The Old Country is its compelling narrative, driven by strong character development and outstanding voice performances. The protagonist, Enzo Favara, evolves from a life of hardship into one entangled with a powerful mafia family. The story begins with familiar tropes but gradually unfolds into a richer exploration of loyalty, ambition, and the duality of family life - both its allure and its imprisoning nature.

Visually, the game is stunning, with meticulously crafted environments that evoke a sense of cinematic grandeur. The artistic direction creates an immersive atmosphere, enhancing the storytelling experience. The characters are well-defined, avoiding caricature while still embodying the classic traits of the genre. The voice acting, particularly, adds depth to these characters, making their journeys feel genuine and engaging.

Despite its strengths, the game does face some design challenges. The gameplay can sometimes feel unremarkable, adhering to a traditional mission structure that may occasionally frustrate players. Stealth mechanics can be inconsistent, and certain gameplay elements might feel outdated. However, these shortcomings are often overshadowed by the narrative's emotional pull and the high production values.

In conclusion, Mafia: The Old Country is a title that successfully balances its narrative ambitions with a streamlined gameplay experience. While it may not break new ground in terms of gameplay mechanics, it excels in storytelling, character development, and visual presentation. Players willing to embrace its simplicity will find a rewarding experience that cuts through the fluff, focusing on what truly matters: the story.

The upcoming DLC for Mafia: The Old Country, titled "Man of Honor," is set to launch on August 14th, and it looks like it's packed with new content!

Design director Josh Zammit recently gave a sneak peek into what players can expect when teaming up with Ennio Salieri, a character many will remember as the antagonist from the first Mafia game. In this DLC, players will join forces with Enzo Favara to "settle old scores," which sounds like it's going to be quite the adventure!

Here are some highlights of what's included in the DLC:

New Gameplay Features:
  • Assassination targets: Players will have new targets to eliminate, adding to the thrill of the game.
  • Races: Get ready to rev your engines and partake in some high-speed races!
  • Jobs: New missions called Jobs will have players infiltrating a citrus farm to take down rival whiskey runners, among other tasks.
  • Challenges: Salieri will offer challenges in Free Ride Mode, which promise to amp up the difficulty for even the most skilled players.
  • Rewards: Earn Dinari to spend on new vehicles, weapons (like the pump-handle shotgun and Precisione Speciale rifle), Charms, horses, and outfits.
  • New throwing knife: The Rimbalzu, which can ricochet off targets to take down multiple enemies, adds a fun twist to combat.
  • Additional activities: Collect Wanted Posters, complete Stunt Jumps, and destroy delivery trucks for extra fun!

A year and a week after the original release, the highly anticipated DLC, "Man of Honor," for Mafia: The Old Country is finally here! You can grab it now on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Now, before you dive in, it's important to note that "Man of Honor" isn't a direct continuation of the main storyline. Instead, it offers a side adventure featuring our protagonist, Enzo Favara, who has been tasked with a critical mission by none other than Ennio Salieri, the notorious Don from the original Mafia game. While details about Salieri's ultimate goals remain a mystery, players can expect to engage in two new chapters filled with various Jobs and Challenges.

Both chapters are accessible in Free Ride Mode, where you can take on exciting tasks like races and assassinations. If you perform well, there are some fantastic rewards waiting for you, including five new Charms, three guns, and three knives - one of which has a rather amusing feature of bouncing off a target's head!

But that's not all! The DLC also introduces three new vehicles, two new horses, three outfits, and five hats. It seems that crime in Valle Dorata really does pay off!
