The Callisto Protocol
The Callisto Protocol is an upcoming third-person survival horror game scheduled for release on December 2, 2022. The game is being developed by Striking Distance Studios, founded by Glen Schofield, who had previously co-created the Dead Space series.

The Callisto Protocol is set in 2320 at a prison colony called Black Iron, operated by the United Jupiter Company, and located on Jupiter's moon Callisto. The player takes the role of a prisoner Jacob Lee (Josh Duhamel) held at Black Iron, finding themselves in the midst of an alien invasion that appears to have been engineered by the prison's warden

The origins of The Callisto Protocol began with the formation of Striking Distance as a studio within PUBG Corporation (now PUBG Studios) in June 2019, helmed by Glen Schofield, who had previously co-created the Dead Space series at Visceral Games. The studio was created to expand the PUBG: Battlegrounds universe by creating a narrative driven game. Schofield said that when he met with PUBG Corporation where they explained their goal to expand the PUBG narrative, he already had the concept for The Callisto Protocol in mind and presented that to them and worked with them to fit his idea into their universe. However by May 2022, Schofield stated that the game grown to be its own story and no longer connected to PUBG, though there remain small nods to the latter

From the website;

Survive to Escape the horrors of Callisto.

In this narrative-driven, third-person survival horror game set 300 years in the future, the player will take on the role of Jacob Lee – a victim of fate thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. When inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, the prison is thrown into chaos. To survive, Jacob must battle his way to safety to escape Black Iron Prison, while uncovering the dark and disturbing secrets buried beneath the surface of Callisto. Using a unique blend of shooting and close-quarters combat, Jacob will need to adapt his tactics to combat the rapidly evolving creatures while scavenging to unlock new weapons, gear, and abilities to outrun the growing threat and escape the horrors of Jupiter's Dead Moon.

Very Dead Space, but thats a very good thing

We now know how long it will take to finish The Callisto Protocol when it releases later this year.

Speaking to Edge Magazine (via MP1st), Glen Schofield noted that The Callisto Protocol is roughly 12 - 14 hours long, but there are additional paths called "beta paths" that change things in the game and extend the game. Schofield stayed vague on the matter noting that he didn't want to reveal what they are, how many are in the game, or how to find them as he wants players to experience it for themselves. He noted that he also wanted players to speak to each other after they finished the game so they could discuss the differences in their playthroughs and hopefully encourage them to go back and see it for themselves.

It's unclear if this could mean the game has different endings, but it's a nice addition to keep players coming back for more. It's expected that there will be more to this game than its initial campaign as well.

This looks incredible. I'm a massive Dead Space fan, in the top 5 favourite games ever, so this is something I will definitely consider buying.

Any details about what is included in the season pass?
Not really any details that I've seen.

Given that it is a single-player game the season pass will probably expand the story through one or two DLC.

This comment comes via an interview conducted at Gamescom doesn't reveal much either. CTO Mark James said the following: "We've left the world expandable. We've created a world that can tell different stories, and so we can either tell those stories either through DLC, or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products. We've left those open."

Details for its Season Pass have finally been revealed. Included with the Digital Deluxe Edition, it features the Outer Way Skin Collection, which features Outer Way armour. An insurgency group made it when fighting the UJC.

Then there's the Contagion Bundle, which adds a brutal new mode called Contagion with less ammo and health drops, a customized difficulty and permadeath. There are also 13 new death animations for Jacob and new skins in the Watchtower Skin Collection.

The Riot Bundle sees players venturing to a new part of Black Iron and battling waves of enemies in the new Riot mode. As you gain Credits, you can upgrade or craft weapons to survive for longer. There are also 12 new death animations for enemies and the Engineer Skin Collection.

Finally, story DLC is also coming, which invites players to "Dig deeper into the horrifying secrets of The Callisto Protocol".

Expect all of this to release over the next year as part of the game's post-launch support.

According to the developer, the game is going to receive plenty of support once it's released. Speaking with True Trophies, Striking Distance Studios' CTO Mark James said that the developer view the upcoming survival horror title as "a full-service", which means you can expect DLC. As per James, the game will get "a full year" of post-launch support.

"We view this as a full-service title and we will be investing in DLC," he said. "We're looking at a full year of support after release."

As for what that support will entail, details remain scant on that front. James says The Callisto Protocol's world is "expandable", which means some of those stories could be told through expansions- though interestingly, he says they could also be told in sequels, with Striking Distance Studios hoping to turn the new IP into a franchise.

"We've left the world expandable," James said. "We've created a world that can tell different stories, and so we can either tell those stories either through DLC, or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products. We've left those open."

"We like to think of this as a franchise — every developer when they [make a new] IP, they like to think of it as a franchise investment," he added. " It's really expensive to generate a new IP, so we always want to try and get the most out of it."

James also said that DLC could entail new modes inspired by "other survival horror", though finishes by saying that there's still plenty of stories to tell connected to the game that they could turn to for expansions.

"At the moment, we've got a linear story mode. […] We can still tell the whole story of the prison outbreak without even touching on the linear story."

The Callisto Protocol will take players to an abandoned high-security prison on Jupiter's dead moon, Callisto, and while that sounds like an excellent enough setting for a sci-fi survival horror game in and of itself, there are going to be several layers to it.

And I'm talking about actual layers. In a PlayStation Blog post, developer Striking Distance Studios has revealed a new location, called Below, which, appropriately enough, is a network of underground tunnels and passageways beneath the aforementioned prison. In terms of its aesthetics, its grounded and grimy look is going to provide a contrast to the sci-fi look of the rest of the game, according to director of environment art Aasim Zubair.

[Below is unique] because the majority of it is based off real-world materials and shapes," Zubair says. "Instead of the rugged sci-fi design cues that dominate many of the game's other environments, Below allows the player to feel grounded in something familiar and relatable while also letting them look into the past of humanity's first attempt to colonize the dead moon."

Interestingly, according to Zubair, Below will also provide "a great opportunity for exploration, hidden areas, creepiness and a chance to use the space for compelling environmental storytelling."

Meanwhile, character director Glauco Longhi has also provided more details on the Biophages, which will serve as the primary monstrous enemies you'll be crossing paths with in The Callisto Protocol. "We started with the idea of infected humans so that part of the fear is what happened to them could also happen to you," he says.

Of the 10-11 unique enemy types The Callisto Protocol will feature, the Grunts will be the lowest in the food chain, as their name suggests. "[Grunts] bridge the gap between humans and more monstrous creatures, [their] silhouettes, proportions and anatomy is somewhat close to humans," says Longhi.

10-11 unique enemy types
As spotted by MP1st, Schofield revealed that The Callisto Protocol will feature 10-11 different types of enemies for players to take on in combat. In the interview, he also mentioned that different enemies will have different weak points and behaviours and that dismembering them will also be a viable strategy during combat.

Additionally, Schofield also confirmed that there won't be any space combat in the game. Though there will be sequences that take place outdoors, you should expect all combat in the game to remain strictly grounded- literally.

Then there are the Rushers, which have a "contortionist, crooked sort of motion with twisted joints and limbs", and can sprint, leap on players, and even walk on walls. Another enemy type, called the Blind, was also previous revealed

the blind
The Blind are a biophage (which is what the monsters in The Callisto Protocol are referred to as) that has "evolved and adapted in the dark." It should be interesting to see, to say the very least, how the game makes use of this enemy. Surely, horror fans can imagine a few good ways that'll bring plenty of scares.
