And "shots" fired by Ontario leader Doug Ford.

Canada's most populous province Ontario is slapping a retaliatory 25% surcharge on electricity it sends to US states in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ontario leader Doug Ford confirmed the move in a news conference on Monday morning, saying it will increase costs about $10 (£7.75) per megawatt-hour for US customers.

Roughly 1.5 million American homes in the northern border states of New York, Michigan and Minnesota will be impacted.

Ford said that the surcharge on energy will remain until the threat of tariffs from the US "is gone for good."

"President Trump's tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They're making life more expensive for American families and businesses," Ford said in a statement on Monday.

He added that Ontario will be using the revenue from its retaliatory tariffs on energy to support local workers and businesses impacted by US tariffs on Canada.

He's totally unhinged just doubled down on the economic war with Canada, again rambling about 51st state nonsense. Markets will continue to bleed in the near future.

US President Donald Trump has just shared on social media that he will be raising the tariff on all steel and aluminium coming into the US from Canada to 50%.

A 25% tariff was set to be implemented on Wednesday.

"We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State."

The US president says such a move would make all tariffs "disappear", would make Canadians more secure and reduce taxes in the country.

He goes on to say that it would make the "greatest and most powerful nation" even "bigger, better and stronger" and erase the "artificial line" separating the two nations.

"Let's bring back manufacturing to the US by making it more expensive to import materials for manufacturing."

Or maybe the tariffs were never meant to bring manufacturing back in the first place. Who would've thought.

Well that didn't last long

US Commerce Secretary confirms plans dropped for 50% tariffs on Canadian metals

In addition to senior US trade adviser Peter Navarro, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has now also confirmed that the White House will no longer impose 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, according to the BBC's US media partner, CBS News.

Trump had earlier suggested a reversion to 25% tariffs could happen today.

The original 25% tariffs will still go into effect on Wednesday, Lutnick says.

The dumb made up reason is that the US needs it for national security, which makes no sense.

The possible actual reasons are that he wants it for minerals, and/or he simply wants his legacy to be that the US expanded under his term, which would also explain the Canada and Panama fixations.
