I understand the argument the has arisen about moving away from the FA's pathway for elite coaches. However, for two reasons, I believe Tuchel is the best appointment realistically possible.

Firstly, Tuchel commands respect and ruthlessness which will help the culture of elite coaching in and around the FA. Those learning their craft will benefit from his expertise so, even if he doesn't win a trophy, he will have a sustained impact.

Secondly, there are no coaches currently available and of the required pedigree. The FA wanted someone with a proven track record at the time of the game. The last English coach to win a trophy - Harry Redknapp with Tottenham.

Tuchel may have blotches on his record, but has won trophies in 3 countries with 4 different clubs including an elite knockout tournament. Even the best English coaches - to my mind Graham Potter and Eddie Howe - can't claim anywhere near that.

This could actually be a good appointment for England. Tuchel thrives off cup competitions and he has a good record in them. It shouldn't matter that he's German. It's a game at the end of the day and they want to win things.

Good appointment, imo.

Why does it matter which country he's from? Hired to do a professional job and he has an excellent track record. There isn't really any standout English manager available that has a decent pedigree.
