Watched Blade Runner : The Final Cut on Netflix today. I have only ever seen the original theatrical cut of this s-f classic, not any of the subsequent attempts at fixing/improving it (which were not needed, IMHO, even the theatrical is a classic). Missed the voiceover to be honest, though that is one of the things Ridley Scott himself was apparently unhappy with in the theatrical print, since it was added over his disapproval. The story seems to flow better, though, than I remember with parallel plots about Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) with his group of rogue replicants intercut fairly well. Or maybe the original was like that, too, and I just forget?

Had to chuckle at the title card that shows the date as November, 2019. It is definitely a mid-twentieth century idea of what the 21st would look like and misses some details of our actual reality, e.g. Deckard uses a pay videophone to make a call from a bar whereas in the real November, 2019 you would make a video call using your phone running Skype or WeChat or something. OTOH, it is such an impressively drawn and developed 21st century you kind of don't care. Those off-details makes sense in their version of 2019. At the same time, the contrast between the gaudy, advertising screens (often carried on airships of some kind) and the glamourous world of the wealthy, and the crowded, dingy world Deckard inhabits definitely has its parallels in the real 2019.

And the questions about humanity and at one point does something like a replicant become "human" definitely still need asking as we get further and further along in the development of AI.

Just Mercy, that has recently arrived on Sky. Jamie Foxx and Michael B Jordan are superb in it and it's a very good watch. Based on a true story.

Over the last couple of days.

Everest (2015) - Jake Gyllenhaal features. Based on the 1996 disaster, an intriguing watch.

Parasite (2019) - Now available on Prime. Perhaps not worthy of the Oscars hype, but a quirky storyline. Enjoyed it.

12 Years a Slave (2013) - Finally got around to watching this. Based on a true story, quite harrowing in parts. Good watch.

A Quiet Place. Not sure if it's a horror, thriller or sci-fi. But enjoyable enough.

Watched Chapter 27 tonight, its a film about Mark Chapman who murdered John Lennon, Jared Leto played him.

Jared Leto may not be the best actor in the world but he is dedicated. For this movie, he tortured himself to fit into the role. Putting on a lot of weight and becoming almost isolated from the rest of the cast while filming it .

Has me in stitches no matter how many times I watch it.

Richard Jewell - A good watch, very interesting story of which I didn't really know anything about. Great performances, too.

Predestination (Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook)

Secret government time travelling agency set up to try to influence the past to stop bad events from happening. The movie goes in some wild directions but it was enjoyable enough.

Unhinged - Russel Crowe plays a nut case in a very far fetched thriller, still enjoyed it though.

Scent Of A Woman. Had never managed to see this before. It's great. Very moving drama and laugh out loud in places too. Pacino in his Prime before he became sort of overused. Has that refreshing unPCness that older movies have.
