Mr Harrigan's Phone

Adaptation from a Stephen King novella about a young boy's kinship with a reclusive billionaire and what transpires after he dies. It's a slow burner, and is a tense horror coming of age-drama. Although it's not really a horror. It's good - the main actor is superb
It's Donald Sutherland, right? He's wonderful.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2023) - Jim Broadbent stars as the titular character who decides to walk the length of England to visit a dying ex-colleague. If was OK, typical British movie. Sort of feel good but with dark overtones.

Watched When We Were Kings for the first time in years yesterday.

Really enjoyed watching it again - there's probably 5 or 10 minutes worth of stuff that doesn't add that much, but there's a good narrative to it and it's worth watching just for the footage it has of Ali.

Rob Roy

Took Rob out for a spin. Man there are some great performances In this. Tim Roth, Brian Cox and John Hurt all knocking it out of the ball park. It's very well paced and edited, it clips along very nicely, builds plot intersped with action and swordplay. Attention to detail regarding costume etc is top class. It has not aged badly at all. If it were released tomorrow I would not bat an eyelid.

The ending is great.

It remains unfortunate that Rob Roy was overshadowed by the vastly inferior Braveheart.

Resurrection

Chicago homicide detectives Prudhome and Hollingsworth are assigned to investigate a murder. Both become entangled in the plot of a serial killer whose goal is to recreate the body of Christ.

The first 30ish minutes all I could think about was how closely it resembled "Se7en". It had the same basic theme: two cops investigating a series of brutal (and unsettlingly gory) murders that follow a common theme.

You have to have a really strong stomach to be able to sit through this movie that tries to outdo the film Se7en which has an almost identical storyline

The acting was OK, Lambert was both good and bad, but overall a very passable job.

This is nowhere near the quality of Se7en, but it is worth a watch.

Moneyball (2011)

Revisited this as it popped up on Netflix. Probably in my top 3 greatest Pitt performances. An understated performance that works well alongside Jonah Hill's breakout dramatic role. Both Oscar nominated. Made me care about baseball briefly

The Hunger Games franchise. It has aged well and the films remain compelling viewing. Perhaps Mockingjay could have been done as one film instead of two, but whereas I haven't read the books and commented on the merits of the adaptation, it's pretty decent imo.

Rewatched Gone Girl. Not as compelling as I remember it. Way too long and my least favourite Fincher film from those I've seen.
