Training Day

Just watched this one last night, eager to watch it again now knowing what I know. A movie about a day that seems to last a week, taking aim at the state of LA under the rule of the 90s/2000s LAPD.

I don't think it's the strongest script, and nothing about the direction blew me away, but the two leads are on fire. Ethan Hawke loves a naive, bright-eyed rookie role. This feels like the role by which all future Denzel performances are measured. It's a good movie without them, but their two performances elevate it so so, so much for me.

The Devil's Double on Amazon Prime.

Based on the true story of Latif Yahia, a former Iraqi army officer who acted as the body double of Uday Hussein - Saddam's eldest son - between 1988 and 1991. Dominic Cooper plays both roles. Not a bad watch, Uday Hussein was certainly one unhinged individual. Worth a look if you're after something a bit different.

Watched The Nice Guys last night, never even heard of it, just found it while scrolling through Prime and thought I'd give it a try and glad I did, comedy starring Ryan Gosling, who plays a PI and Russell Crowe, who plays an enforcer, and both are paid to find a teenage girl who's gone missing. The storyline is pretty simple, the acting is very good, and there's plenty of laughs in there. Apparently, it flopped at the box office but has become a cult favourite.

The Bride Wore Black

A simple, extremely watchable, Hitchockian, revenge thriller with a standout performance from Jeanne Moreau as the deadly protagonist. You'd think this was the main inspiration for Kill Bill, but apparently not.

In a weird way I feel like I enjoyed this a lot more than I should have, given its simplicity.

Jurassic Park - in memory if Sam Neill.

Still great entertainment despite all of the filmmaking errors and plot holes
