As promised, Infinity Ward delivered our first proper look at the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The reveal merely consisted of a single-player campaign trailer, which showed off a few snippets of gameplay, alongside the usual mix of in-engine cutscenes.

The trailer delivers, offering a look at the full, modern version of the classic Task Force 141 fans of the original Modern Warfare series should be familiar with. The setting, however, may come as a surprise, if you expected it to follow on directly from the first game.

The trailer doesn't provide any information on the campaign missions, but we do know the sequel follows Task Force 141 and new characters after the events of Modern Warfare. In the game, Task Force 141 are changed with eliminating a threat to global security which will span the Americas, Aisa, and Europe.

This campaign will feature offshore sieges, underwater combat, assaults from 30,000 feet above, and stealth missions.

After the campaign, you can play the tactical co-op mode that will hone your team-building skills for the multiplayer component.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches October 28 on PC (back on Steam!), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Those who pre-order the game will get early access to the planned open beta, which will come to PlayStation first.

While the multiplayer reveal will take place at a different date, we did learn a few nuggets of information today alongside the worldwide campaign reveal.

According to various previews, the game will feature a revamped Gunsmith with more customization than prior, allowing you to progress multiple base weapons that are part of the same family.

New gadgets will be available, including a field cam which you can remotely operate to see if there are enemies nearby. Another piece of equipment is a DDoS device (IGN) which releases an EMP charge to stall enemy equipment and vehicles. There's also a Drill Charge that you toss on a wall or vehicle. After it drills a hole into the target, you can toss a grenade into the opening.

With Modern Warfare 2, you can expect enhanced rendering, photogrammetry technology, and some rather swish-looking water segments, which the reveal trailer teased. Speaking of the water, IGN's preview says to expect both new and updated water physics, and the ability to use your knives and pistols underwater. While weapons will experience drag, especially bullets, equipment new to the series will adjust when used in water. One such piece of equipment is a decoy, and when inflated, mimics a soldier swimming with their gun drawn.

When it comes to modes, there will be at least two new ones: Knockout and Prisoner Rescue. The former is a round-based mode, and the latter has you either rescuing prisoners or keeping them from being taken. In both modes, if all of your teammates are eliminated, you lose the round.

Other things to note are larger lobby modes which feature from up to 64 players to 6v6. The ping system will return, and this time out features more communication options. The slide mechanic also returns and features an additional movement allowing you to dive to the ground.

You can also expect plenty of free post-launch content featuring new maps, modes, and special events.

There will be three different editions made available.

Below, you can find out what you're getting with each edition of the game, starting with the Vault Edition.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Vault Edition is considered the ultimate edition. Available for all platforms, it is the highest-tier version and will run you $99.99 or your regional equivalent.

In addition to the base game, the Vault Edition contains the following:
  • The Red Team 141 Pack: Features day-one access to multiplayer Operators Ghost, Farah, Price, and Soap wearing a special masked outfit themed around the legendary mercenary Ghost.
  • FJX Cinder Weapon Vault: More details on the FJX Cinder Weapon Vault and the new Gunsmith will be shared closer to Modern Warfare 2's launch.
  • Season One Battle Pass: Good for one season, this offering also comes with 50 Tier Skips (or its equivalent) for free. If the Vault Edition is purchased after Season One, that free Battle Pass and Tier Skips can apply to that current season. This benefit will allow you to unlock the full offering of seasonal content like Weapon Blueprints, Operator Skins, and more.
  • Ghost Legacy Pack: This pack comes with previously released Modern Warfare Bundle content that includes one dozen skins for Ghost as well as 10 Tactical Weapon Blueprints of weapons in the same family. For Ghost fans who may already have this content, this won't be the only instant-unlock reward for the current Warzone.
  • In-Store Bonus: Purchasing Modern Warfare 2 through the in-game store (via Warzone, Vanguard, Black Ops Cold War, or Modern Warfare) will grant you 10 hours of Double XP Tokens and 10 hours of Double Weapon XP Tokens at release.
  • Cross-Gen: This edition also includes access to the previous generation console version of Modern Warfare 2 (PS4, Xbox One) and the current version (PS5, Xbox Series X/S).

Along with the Vault Edition, standard PC and cross-gen Digital Editions will also include rewards and the ability to upgrade.

All game platforms have a digital version that includes the base offering, and other instant rewards to be announced. It will run you $69.99 or your regional equivalent.

The Cross-Gen Bundle of Modern Warfare 2 will give you access to the previous generation console version of Modern Warfare 2 as well as the current-gen version. When using a next-generation console, ensure you are playing that version of the game rather than the previous generation version, as both may be available for download in the Cross-Gen Bundle.

This version will also be made available in disc format for PlayStation and Xbox. It should be noted though that the PS5 disc version does not include the PS4 version of Modern Warfare 2.

For PC, the digital version is the standard edition and is the only other version of Modern Warfare 2 outside of the Vault Edition for this platform.

Other rewards that all digital pre-order customers will receive are to be revealed at a later date.

At select retailers, there will also be specially marked boxes of Modern Warfare 2 that will include a unique Call of Duty Endowment bundle. This Call of Duty Endowment bundle will be available for immediate use on October 28.

Coming to Battle.net, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox SeriesX/S, the next game in the franchise will be released on October 28.

All editions of the game can be pre-ordered now, and doing so will provide you with early access to the open beta no matter which edition you purchase. The beta promises to give you an advanced look into the game's multiplayer including maps, modes, weapons, and other features.

One day after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's official unveiling, the game showed up again during Summer Game Fest's livestream. We got treated to a longer playthrough of a mission from the single-player campaign, which should be familiar to anyone who watched the reveal trailer.

The new visuals on display are stunning and show off the upgraded Modern Warfare 2019 engine, which is going to power future Call of Duty games going forward.

It shows an incredibly atmospheric looking mission, one that looks to require an amount of carefulness. The lighting in particular looks impressive in the trailer, which is aided by how damn wet the whole level looks. Containers are sliding about, and as things progess, a whole bunch of enemies show up, so plenty to keep track of.

Aside from that, it's your standard point and shoot gameplay Call of Duty fans have become pretty familiar with.

Outside of the upgraded visuals, Modern Warfare 2 will also include smarter AI. The updated engine allows for more of them simultaneously with other players, which is going to come into play in Spec-Ops mode, as well as another, yet-to-be-announced sandbox mode.

Infinity Ward and Activision debuted the gameplay launch trailer today. The focus is squarely on the single-player campaign here. We get treated to plenty of new footage, showing both gameplay and cutscenes from various missions.

Thought I'd get this considering the last COD I owned was the original Modern Warfare. Doesn't seem much different in terms of core gameplay but enjoying the story mode so far. The graphics are pretty good.

What's everyone's opinion on the campaign. Thought it was decent but they hung onto the "remember this mission" a bit too hard for this one. Nothing really new. In MW2(2019), there were plenty of new moments and cool set pieces. Like the whole embassy mission.

Really enjoyed it apart from the motorway level where you are rescuing Laswell

Invasion is a bit mental. Took me a while to realise the 9 people I mowed down in a row were 8 AI and one player. Was very proud of myself for a minute
