I don't think we will see a full-scale lockdown like the one we had, the economy is simply too important. At most, in England, I think we will continue to see local lockdowns, businesses temporarily restricted and year groups isolating from schools.
The economy is too important to us all if I'm honest, we can't have another full-scale lockdown we will lose so many jobs and ruin lives. Anyone who can work from home effectively should be made to do so until next Spring.

Boris Johnson just said that he wants to move to every person in the UK taking a test every morning to see if they have Covid or not. At the same time Matt Hancock says too many people are asking to have a test when they have no symptoms.

Rule changes in Scotland means that you can only meet with up to 6 people from 2 households now.

Face coverings are now mandatory when moving about in pubs, cafes and restaurants ie going to the toilet. And safe must wear masks (I thought this was already in force).

Cinema and theatre re-opening has been postponed to early October at the earliest.

Nearly 10,000 new cases in France today, a country where you must wear a mask outside at all times. 10700+ in Spain.

Both of these numbers are 25% higher than the UK have ever had.

Ontario, Canada has been steady in the 100 to 180 or so new cases per day range for the past couple weeks. Higher than during the previous weeks, but below peak. And those are concentrated in major urban areas; Toronto, the suburbs around Toronto, and Ottawa. My area, a smaller city surrounded by rural areas, is running 0-2 cases per day and the number of active cases has been dropping.

As much as I loathe Boris Johnson and the current government, I do appreciate how difficult this situation must be for them to manage. It's absolute bollocks though, isn't it? Last night I went for dinner with six of my family, but in three days time, that in itself would be an illegal activity.

On Monday, my partner and I, and our two kids, could sit in a pub indoors surrounded by 50 complete strangers and that would be perfectly legal. We could even meet my parents there. If, however, we then went to their house, round the corner, and sat in their garden with them and, say, just my sister, then we'd all effectively be breaking the law.

As you say it's incredibly difficult to manage it but they are making it incredibly difficult, why announce new measures on Wednesday, for next Monday? Idiotic, and there's nobody to "police" any of it anyway, I mean who polices who goes in your house, not to mention the other 40m households in the country?

It is quite frankly an impossible thing to manage well, no matter who is the incumbent, and it's proving impossible worldwide, as many countries are proving.

Nearly 100,000 new cases in India today (that they are aware of).

But the pub should have social distancing in place. So you wouldn't have 30 people sat on each other's knees.

I guess its putting rules in place to help whilst not bankrupting the country

It may sound silly and can't be policed, but the new gathering rule will put off some people from attending in big groups, it will help a little.

The UK economy grew by 6.6% in July. The notion that we are in lockdown pedalled on this thread is an exaggeration. (I know the situation is different in other countries).

The official figures show the third month of growth in a row but we have a long way to go to recover to get back to the economic output we had at the start of the outbreak. The economy can continue to move in the right direction if people continue to take precautions with hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks as required. It's not a simple question of the economy or people's welfare. These are heavily interlinked.
