Champions League Celtic Arsenal knockout stage English teams

The Champions League 2025-26 season kicked off with high hopes for English teams. Rangers and Celtic faced challenges early on, with Celtic suffering a shocking exit in the qualifying rounds. Discussions surrounding the performance of Scottish clubs ignited debates about their competitiveness in Europe, highlighting a notable decline in Scottish coefficients.12

As the group stages commenced, English clubs like Arsenal showcased strong performances, leading to a mix of excitement and disappointment. Chelsea faced tough opposition while Liverpool struggled, raising concerns about their consistency. Many fans remained optimistic about Arsenal's potential, speculating that this could be their best chance at the coveted trophy.34

However, the knockout stages revealed the vulnerability of English teams, including heavy defeats for notable clubs. Discussions revolved around managerial decisions and squad depth, especially concerning Manchester City's unexpected spiral. Opinions varied, with some believing certain teams needed significant changes to remain competitive in future tournaments.56

"Celtic were just awful. I cannot get over..."

Verdict

The season highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of English clubs in the Champions League. While some teams showed promise, overall performance raised questions about the future competitiveness of these clubs on the European stage.

It's a tough draw for Chelsea who, as well as going away to Bayern Munich, will face Barcelona, Napoli, Benfica, Atalanta and Ajax. I expect them to get through but it won't be easy.

PSG have arguably the toughest draw of all the big teams, but they have the quality to deal with that.

Well, Tottenham weren't very convincing but they managed to scrape by Villarreal 1-0 thanks to an own goal by the goalkeeper.

I didn't see the Arsenal game but they won 2-0 in Bilbao against Athletic Club.

Two quick goals in the first 6 minutes from Robertson and Salah PUT Liverpool in control against Atletico.

Atletico need to slow this down for 10 minutes or so or it could get very ugly!

Bayern München seems like a much stronger team than Chelsea. It surprises me a little that there is such a clear difference between the levels of the two teams. It could have been 5 or 6 goals for München.

Atletico have equalised against Liverpool. Both goals from Marcos Llorente, who I think now has 4 goals in 2 games at Anfield.

Van Dijk wins it for Liverpool in the 92nd minute!!

How many times have Liverpool scored late goals to win games this season?

Shame Napoli had a player sent off. I was looking forward to their game against Man City, but it has been one-way traffic for City with a man advantage.

Brilliant goal by Marcus Rashford, his second goal of the match, against Newcastle last night. After a few mediocre games to start his spell at Barcelona, he is beginning to find his feet now.

Yes, it would have been an interesting game had Napoli not been reduced to 10 men early on. Another goal by Haaland, who has now scored 50 Champions League goals in just 49 appearances (the quickest to reach the 50-goal mark).

A mixed night for the English clubs tonight.

Chelsea beat Benfica 1-0. Richard Rios' first-half own goal was enough for Chelsea to defeat former manager Jose Mourinho on his latest return to Stamford Bridge. Joao Pedro was sent off in injury time and is the third Chelsea player to be sent off in four games.

Victor Osimhen's penalty kick gave Galatasaray a 1-0 victory over Liverpool. Liverpool keeper Alisson went off injured on 56 minutes.

Jens Petter Hauge scored twice in the second half to put Bodo/Glimt 2-0 up against Tottenham. Micky van de Ven and a last-minute own goal secured a point for Spurs. Bodo/Glimt missed a first half penalty.

Elsewhere, Harry Kane continued his fine scoring run with a brace as Bayern Munich beat Pafos 5-1. Kylian Mbappe scored a hattrick and reached 60 Champions League goals as Real Madrid thrashed Kairat 5-0. There were also comfortable wins for Atletico Madrid, Marseille, and Inter Milan.

Atalanta 2 - 1 Club Brugge
Kairat Almaty 0 - 5 Real Madrid
Atletico Madrid 5 - 1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Bodoe/Glimt 2 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea 1 - 0 Benfica
Galatasaray 1 - 0 Liverpool
Inter 3 - 0 Slavia Prague
Marseille 4 - 0 Ajax
Pafos FC 1 - 5 Bayern Munich
