Champions League Celtic Arsenal knockout stage English teams

The Champions League 2025-26 season kicked off with high hopes for English teams. Rangers and Celtic faced challenges early on, with Celtic suffering a shocking exit in the qualifying rounds. Discussions surrounding the performance of Scottish clubs ignited debates about their competitiveness in Europe, highlighting a notable decline in Scottish coefficients.12

As the group stages commenced, English clubs like Arsenal showcased strong performances, leading to a mix of excitement and disappointment. Chelsea faced tough opposition while Liverpool struggled, raising concerns about their consistency. Many fans remained optimistic about Arsenal's potential, speculating that this could be their best chance at the coveted trophy.34

However, the knockout stages revealed the vulnerability of English teams, including heavy defeats for notable clubs. Discussions revolved around managerial decisions and squad depth, especially concerning Manchester City's unexpected spiral. Opinions varied, with some believing certain teams needed significant changes to remain competitive in future tournaments.56

"Celtic were just awful. I cannot get over..."

Verdict

The season highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of English clubs in the Champions League. While some teams showed promise, overall performance raised questions about the future competitiveness of these clubs on the European stage.

PSG will enter the final as favourites for sure, but it only takes a few of their players to have an off day and Arsenal will be there to capitalise, assuming they play to their best.

The Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG will NOT be free to watch in the UK for the first time ever in the competition's history, since rebranding 34 years ago.

Rights holders TNT Sports have also scrapped free streams of the Europa League final and UEFA Conference final.

1-0 to the Arsenal at half-time. They have done absolutely nothing except get lucky with an early goal from Kai Havertz but PSG haven't created anything despite controlling the ball most of the half.

PSG look clueless. I think another sucker punch from Arsenal looks more likely despite PSG having all the possession

We head into extra time. Arsenal have offered very little in the game but I have a sneaky feeling they could knick it.

Dembele scored the PSG equaliser from the penalty spot but he has gone off injured now, along with Kvaratskhelia, who won the penalty. PSG have had their chances but haven't tested David Raya.

It has Ben a terrible final. The winners and their fans won't care but from a neutral point of view it has been one of the worst finals I can remember.

Not really bother who wins but I'd slightly favour Arsenal in the spot kicks.

PSG win 4-3 on penalties. Gabriel missing the decisive kick. Eze also missed for Arsenal and Nuno Mendes saw his spot kick saved by David Raya.

PSG probably deserved to win for trying to play positive and attacking football. Arsenal only had 25% of the ball and one shot on target all game.

Poor final. The better team won in the end.

Arsenal could have had a penalty in extra-time but I also thought PSG could have had one in the first half when the ball hit an Arsenal player (Saka, I think) on the hand in the box.

Yes, poor final.

A lot of talk about Arsenal not getting a penalty. It would probably have been given in the Premier League but I can see why the referee didn't give it - I thought the attacker had a hold of the defender's arm, which caused a clumsy challenge.

PSG should have had a penalty too, as mentioned, Saka handled the ball at least once, it could have actually hit his hand twice in that one movement.

The Arsenal goal also came from a Trossard block that came off his hands/arms but that wasn't mentioned.

Thank god the right side won. Harsh for Arsenal but they play absolutely horrible stuff.
