Battlefield 2042 gameplay community feedback patch updates multiplayer modes

Initial excitement surrounded the reveal of Battlefield 2042, highlighting its focus on next-gen capabilities and multiplayer features. Fans eagerly anticipated new gameplay modes and the promising return of vast battlefields, but concerns arose early when it was revealed that the game would forgo a traditional single-player campaign.12

As the open beta launched, backlash quickly mounted with many players reporting matchmaking issues, bugs, and a lack of core features such as a scoreboard. This led to calls for delays and refunds, with the community expressing frustration over the perceived failure to meet expectations.34

In response to criticism, DICE began releasing patches aimed at addressing player concerns and improving the game, with some players expressing cautious optimism about future developments. Despite ongoing issues, a dedicated community remains hopeful for the game's long-term potential through future content updates and seasonal changes.56

"Not having a scoreboard... is absolutely ridiculous."

Verdict

The thread reflects a divided community, with some players dissatisfied and others hopeful for improvements. Ongoing support and updates will be crucial for restoring player trust.

EA has said that Battlefield 6 "takes full advantage of the power of next-generation platforms", and that the game is on track for an early 2021 reveal and holiday release (between September-December 2021).

EA CEO Andrew Wilson shared more details about Battlefield 6 in an earnings call with investors. Wilson said that Battlefield 6 will tap into the horsepower of both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which should "bring massive and immersive battles to life with more players than ever".

Wilson also added that Battlefield 6 will feature maps "with unprecedented scale" and that "the next vision of Battlefield takes all the destruction, player agency, and vehicle and weapon combat that the franchise is known for and elevates it to another level."

Battlefield 6 has been tipped for a holiday 2021 release date, and it appears that will be the case. Battlefield tends to release between September and November of each year, and Wilson confirmed the game will arrive in the holiday season.

"We will reveal the game in the spring and deliver the defining Battlefield experience for our players in the 2021 holiday season," Wilson said.

Wargames

While Battlefield is still one of the biggest games of the year, it's fair to say that the latest iteration, Battlefield 5, didn't quite resonate as strongly with the game's player base as previous titles.

Much like Call of Duty, there's always a back and forth over the direction and setting of each title, with some players preferring a more military-focused game, while others would like to see a more modern, futuristic depiction.

For those in the more traditional camp, Wilson has said the next Battlefield game will "mark a return to all-out military warfare", which should please the purists.

The second post-launch patch for Battlefield 2042 has arrived. This update is a little on the smaller side, but it does bring several welcome fixes and directly addresses a couple of the larger points of criticism with the game.

Update 0.2.2's most interesting addition is nerfing the excessive weapon bloom, which made it so shots don't land where you aim. It also makes the PP-29 SMG - the weapon everyone defaulted to in order to get around bloom - less effective at range by upping its vertical recoil.

Another important fix in today's update is one resolving the bug that prevented players from being revived when they die next to a wall or geometry. On that note, players should no longer be stuck in a downed state, unable to be revived or respawn.

Battlefield 2042 patch 0.2.2 full notes

General fixes
  • Bullet spread has been reduced on all weapons except Shotguns. This should result in better accuracy during gameplay.
  • Increased PP-29 vertical recoil to ensure that the weapon does not over perform when engaging outside of its intended combat range.
  • Resolved an issue where players who were killed close to obstacles such as walls or water were unable to be revived.
  • Resolved instances where players were stuck in a downed state and unable to respawn. We've also introduced a hidden timer that will activate after 30 seconds of being in a downed state that will force a redeploy should it be required.
  • Breakthrough matches will now correctly end after the last sector has been captured.
  • Resolved an issue that caused players queued for a match in Battlefield Portal to be sent back to the menu, instead of joining the match when a slot became available.
  • Made general improvements to stability to prevent rare occurrences of game crashing.
  • Equipped armour type for the LCAA Hovercraft has been adjusted which increases it's vulnerability against different weapon types.
MD540 Nightbird mounted 20mm cannons - we are reducing the radius at which bullets do damage upon impact, and decreasing their splash damage:
  • Reduced Blast Radius size from 3 to 2.
  • Reduced Inner Blast Radius damage from 1.5 to 0.75.
KA-520 Super Hokum - 30mm cannon (side mount) - we are reducing overall damage and range at which bullets do full damage, while increasing the overall bullet spread:
  • Reduced Blast Radius from 2 to 1.6.
  • Reduced Blast Damage from 20 to 14.
  • Reduced bullet damage before Damage Fall Off starts 18 to 15.
  • Reduced Damage Fall Off distance from 200 to 180.
  • Reduced bullet damage at max Fall Off distance from 8 to 6.
  • Increased bullet range and spread.
AH-64GX Apache Warchief and KA-520 Super Hokum - 30mm cannon - we are reducing the radius at which bullets do damage upon impact, and decreasing their splash damage:
  • Reduced Blast Damage from 20 to 18.
  • Increased the Damage Fall Off for enemies that are further away from the bullet impact centre.
We reduced the overall damage of the minigun for all land vehicles, alongside bullet damage drop off now starting earlier:
  • Reduced bullet damage before Damage Fall Off starts from 18 to 13.
  • Reduced Damage Fall Off distance from 60 to 40.
  • Reduced bullet damage at max Fall Off distance to 6.
Battlefield Portal - UAV-1
  • The UAV-1 has been re-enabled within Battlefield Portal.
  • Greatly reduced health regeneration delay and speed.
  • Increased missile damage against vehicles and infantry.
  • The drone is now able to roadkill enemies.

Not having a scoreboard or any stats to track how you're actually doing is absolutely ridiculous. Even if the game itself was great, you need some way of knowing how you're doing. If you leave out something so basic it's not a surprise that everything else is so poor.

Played some of the 10 hour trial on EA Play/Game Pass. Just with bots as I'm not really into online play that much.

I will wait a few months until I pick this up. I think there is a good game in there somewhere....just not in its current state.

DICE has rolled out a new update on all platforms, one week after a smaller patch went out to address weapon bloom and Hovercraft balance. Unlike that one, however, today's patch is significantly bigger.

This is true for its download size - ranging from 5.5GB to 7GB depending on platform – as well as its content. The patch includes a host of fixes, new features, balance tweaks, and even a little bit of new content.

The patch notes, which you can read yourself on the blog, are way too many to include here, so we're going to pick out the most relevant in our highlights below.

Battlefield 2042 update 0.3.0 highlights

New content

Battlefield 2042 is getting Weekly Missions. Three of these will go live every week, and each will award XP upon completion. If you finish all three in any given week, you'll earn a unique cosmetic. You'll be able to track progress through the main menu.

Battlefield Portal now has new layouts for Rush across all of the game's All-Out Warfare maps. You can also expect more templates in the Builder, including a vehicle TDM one. The Portal Rules Editor is itself getting some new updates, in the form of a new logic option that checks the source of fatal damage done to players.

Gameplay

The clunky CommoRose has seen a number of fixes. It will now be more responsive, and won't show inactive objectives in Breakthrough. It will also show objectives you can tag when it should.

The Plus Menu has been updated, too, to improve the customisation experience. In Conquest, the information spam about sector gains/losses has been toned down.

In terms of game modes, Breakthrough has a long list of fixes that include new capture times, improved spawning algorithm for defenders, and the addition of a new game mode widget to help you better keep track of match progress. The new widget is found inside the scoreboard, and it also shows elapsed match time. The UI will even highlight major events like attacker tickets reaching 25%, and upon reaching the last sector.

The game's world has seen several updates that cover missing effects for players who join late, and various out-of-sync instances on the game's maps. Interact prompts across the game will now say what they do, and not just display 'interact'. The list also extends to destruction audio improvements and better audio for the sandstorm.

HUD

Another exciting set of changes comes to the game's HUD. You'll now see players within 50m who can revive you, and you'll be notified when one of them pings your dead body to indicate they're coming in for a revive. You'll also now correctly see if you're surrounded by teammates when you're waiting for a revive.

When running low on ammo or health, the game will let you know which of your nearby teammates can resupply you. To emphasise teamwork even more, you'll know who healed/resupplied you.

Another major fix concerns the icon clutter in the 3D world. Icons will now scale with distance, so your screen won't be constantly blocked with a stack of them. Friendly player icons will now also properly be hidden when they're behind walls, to further reduce on clutter.

The update adds an option to make the fire mode icon visible at all times, even when the weapon does not support changing fire modes. In general, it should be easier to identify friend from foe after the update, without that creating more UI clutter.

Audio

Battlefield 2042's weak audio may not be addressed this update, but DICE is making several welcome changes to the game's soundscape. Off-screen sounds should play more consistently, including reviving, flares, wingsuit and parachute effects.

When you get shot at, the audio of that gunfire will be easier to identify. There's also a long list of new and updated sounds that affect a number of actions - including updates to vehicle sounds to make them easier to identify and more immersive to drive.

Quality of life

The animation culling that shows distant soldiers with low-quality animations has been relaxed to reduce those instances. The update makes a number of tweaks to soldier animations in general, such as swimming, sliding, leg poses when falling, and prone in certain situations.

The Collection screen is the recipient of another major update. It will now take you fewer clicks to move around and customise your weapon, including the Plus Menu. The screen will properly show which attachment is unlocked, and which is in use.

In general, you can expect transitions between the different game menus to be smoother overall.

Maps

DICE said over 150 fixes have been made to the game's maps, which include everything from geometry fixes, adjusting spots where players get stuck, spawn logic, visual glitches, collision for walls and other objects, as well as audio in certain areas of the maps.

There's also a long list of Specialists balance tweaks, which you can see at the link above.

After what felt like months of radio silence, developer DICE has officially returned to share some of its immediate plans for the game with its player base.

In series of Tweets and a blog post, developer of the struggling multiplayer shooter announced that the first patch in the new year will arrive tomorrow, January 20 on all platforms. The update will go live without any downtime, at 12am PT, 3am ET, 8am UK. Patch 3.2 is on the small side, focusing mainly on various stability issues.

It does have a couple of crucial fixes worth highlighting. First, infantry will no longer be slowed down when receiving weapon fire from vehicles, or explosives in general. The patch also has a couple of hit detection fixes for Sundance (after landing with the wingsuit), as well as hit detection for vehicle weapons.

Beyond the fixes below, you can also expect XP earn to return Portal alongside the patch's release. Developer Ripple Effect created a new categorisation system that's not very straightforward.

Read on below for the full change log:

General
  • Fixed an issue where leaving a party during matchmaking could make the game unresponsive.
  • Fixed an issue where connecting to EA servers after signing up with a new account would not work on the first attempt.
  • Updated behaviour of the quit button during gameplay so it now returns you to the correct screen.
  • Fixed an issue where the loading music would stop playing during level load.
Soldier
  • Fixed a rare occurrence where after landing with the Wingsuit, hits wouldn't always register on some parts of Sundance's hitbox.
  • Fixed occurrences of rubberbanding when running behind friendly players.
  • Fixed a rare issue that could cause you to be stuck in both an alive, and downed loop.
  • Fixed a variety of issues with attaching to ladders that could cause you to get stuck in a state where you could fly away or lose control of your Specialist.
  • Fixed an issue where soldier movement speed was impaired by nearby explosions that spawned craters.
  • Fixed an issue where camera shake and audio for landing would unintentionally trigger when dropping from very small heights.
  • Fixed an issue where weapons from a Loadout Crate would sometimes inherit ammo from the previously selected weapon.
  • Fixed an issue where being spotted when firing a weapon would spot you for too long.
Stability
  • Added multiple fixes to improve overall game stability.
  • Fixed a rendering related crash that could occur for AMD Radeon 7 users while Sundance was visible on screen.
Weapons
  • Sniper and SOFLAM scope glints now show from a further distance.
Vehicles
  • Fixed an issue where passenger weapons would no longer be in sync whenever the driver's turret would rotate, causing bullets to not register when firing at enemies.
-M1A5, T28
  • Improved the effective range and reduced spread on Canister Weapon Pod.
  • Reduced Bullet Spread from 1.6 -> 1.1.
  • Increased Damage Fall Off Distance from 35 -> 40.
Portal
  • The Server Info tab now persists after hitting Refresh in the Portal Server Browser.
  • Fixed an issue where text would overlap when joining a Team Deathmatch game during the end of round sequence.
  • Rules Editor - the "IsInventorySlotActive" value now correctly handles melee weapons.
  • Certain admin commands can no longer be spammed.
Hazard Zone
  • Fixed a black rectangle being present on screen during Hazard Zone end of round when hitting quit at the level progress screen.
Shortly after the launch of Battlefield 2042, some quickly started creating XP farming servers in the community-driven Portal experience. DICE quickly caught on, and decided to disable XP earn in Portal modes, except official ones made by the developer itself or the approved few.

This was always intended to be a short-term solution, but it ended up driving many players away from Portal. Today, the game's developers revealed what will be done to fix these problems. For starters, all the changes outlined below will roll out tomorrow, January 20 alongside the 3.2 patch.

The XP cap per minute in Portal is being increased to 300, which should be enough to reward players without making it easy to farm XP.

Mastery and Weekly Missions can now progress within Portal, but not in all scenarios. To help you make some sense of these restrictions, the developer created this not-at-all-confusing chart. It shows that Battlefield Portal categorises experiences in three different tiers: Full, Moderate, and Restricted.

battlefield_portal_xp_earn_new_system_2022_1.jpg

Full has no limitations, and works just like the rest of Battlefield 2042. These will be limited to the featured Portal experiences. One step below that is Moderate - which comes with the new 300 XP-per-minute cap - lets you progress weekly missions, and earn Mastery XP up to MR12. Finally, Restricted will only let you earn up to 300XP per minute, and nothing else.

Moderate servers are those that use existing modifiers, except for damage and HP, and not the Rules Editor or AI. If your game mode uses the editor, has AI enemies, or adjusts HP/damage values, it'll be considered Restricted under the new classification.

Unfortunately, weapon and vehicle attachment unlocks remain exclusive to the Portal featured experiences (Full).

Of course, without any clear indication of which servers have which XP restrictions, this is going to be even more confusing for players. Portal developer Ripple Effect is well aware of that fact, and is working on some UI updates to make it easier to identify what sort of restrictions each server has. The studio didn't say when we can expect those UI changes to arrive, however.

I am an avid PC gamer and have been for years and have followed the Battlefield series from the very start. With each new release we seemed to have a game that would progress and be a lot better than the last release. I think it was only Battlefield 1 that I was not all that keen on however it was still a very good game and I still play it from time to time.

So it was inevitable when hearing about Battlefield 2042 that it would be on my must have list. So when it was available I purchased the full version on pre-order and that did not come cheap. When they released the per-release version for a few day I installed that as I could not wait to get into it.

Well the release date soon came after that and I was able to download and install it. At first I found it a lot different to what I has used to with the Battlefield series and felt that maybe I just needed to get to know it and how it comes together so I persisted in playing it as much as I could. After a time how it all comes together seemed to fall into place.

Now that I have been playing it for some time I find myself rather disappointed in it. It seems there are still a number of bugs that need to be sorted out to start off with. The playing feel just does not see as smooth and fluid as the previous versions. It seem that been a 2042 year time period we were not really given much futurists weapons and items that one would expect. What you get I would say is basically what you expect to be available today , so that was also rather a disappointment.

It would seem that when starting off and wanting to play finding a game to join is also an issue. You end up sitting waiting for players to join and this will time out and send you back to your Portal and you need to start the process again.

I am also finding that awarding of trophies does not seem to always work so I am not that sure about the points system working correctly.

In closing if I knew then what I know now I would have never purchased this game.

EA is reportedly looking into making certain components of Battlefield 2042 free-to-play in order to salvage it.

According to new information from one insider, EA, the game's publisher, is seemingly interested in exploring the path of free-to-play.

Though DICE continues to improve the game's technical state with patches, there is still a lack of content compared to past games. Battlefield 2042 has also disappointed many of its players, and it led to a major exodus, where the game's player numbers on Steam are regularly below those of Battlefield 5, and even Battlefield 1.

DICE's first comment in the new year didn't touch on any of the outstanding design problems or discuss future content/roadmap. According to new details from insider Tom Henderson, that is seemingly due to a lack of clarity internally about where the game is headed.

In a new video discussing the state of DICE, Henderson claims that EA is exploring potentially making one component free-to-play. Though it's unclear at this stage which part would qualify, the thinking points to either Portal, or Hazard Zone. The former is more likely, according to the report, because Hazard Zone only attracts a few hundred players each day, so it wouldn't make the best impression/convert players to the full game.

As Henderson suggests, EA's earnings call is not far off. Taking place on February 1, there's a possibility the publisher will have more to share about the game's financial performance, and what changes, if any, are being made to right the ship.

The more I play this game the more I see just how bad it is. A few thing I have picked up today;
  • Player cards just show blank on waiting for players to join.
  • I am now on level 86 and have not scored one ribbon as yet. I don't even see any progress in that area,
  • When trying to get a normal online game I mostly just sit in the options "waiting for players to join" then it times out and I have to try again.
  • The only way I can really get any games in is to go via the brows server option.
  • At times I will kill another play and their body just remain frozen in the place they were killed.
  • Items can be seen floating in the air.
  • Aircraft melt into buildings and cannot be seen until the come out.
If I had not purchased the full package and paid a nice bit of cash for that I don't think I will be playing this game. I find myself forcing myself to play and not really enjoying it that much.

I am still playing BF4 more than this one and enjoying that much more.

If you thinking of purchasing this game don't as it is really bad.

The game is basically dead anyway unless they go fully Free2Play to try and salvage it.

On the Steam charts of the top 100 games, Battlefield V and Battlefield 1 both feature with relatively healthy numbers given their age, BF2042 has dropped out entirely.

The game has only out what, 2 months. It's also dropped off the Xbox charts as well.

Probably a good thing this has happened in the overall scheme of things. Trying to lazily slap the Battlefield name on a buggy, unfinished and badly slapped-together clone of Apex/COD/Siege/etc and rush it out the gate, knowing full well it was in a bad state.

Not sure what they expected to happen.
