The post provides a clear outline of the Champions League knockout stage, but lacks context and analysis that would add value to the discussion.

Aguero and Silvas are a massive loss when not playing. Their replacements are of less quality.

Lovely goal from Kevin De Bruyne.

Lyon just keep giving it away, have been on the back foot for the last 30mins.

Ex-Celtic player Moussa Dembele restores Lyon's lead. Only seen it once but he looked offside but the goal in given.

City are terrible at the back.

Only 10 minutes left to save the match.

That was some howler of a miss by Sterling, as bad you'll ever see. And looks like that miss has been compounded. 3-1 Lyon. And Dembele.

Man City are crashing out of Europe.

I'm enjoying the underdogs winning, Leipzig and Lyon. It would have been nice if Atalanta had held on too.

In general, Guardiola set up wrong, didn't change the formation when behind, left it too late to bring on Mahrez, then didn't make any other subs bar a sentimental David Silva send off.

The City defence is shambolic and that's the mad thing. How much was Cancelo? How much was Laporte? And Ederson must take some of the blame for two of these goals.

We had the same discussion about Barcelona last night. Poor recruitment and the spine of the team that brought them success in recent years: de Bruyne, D Silva, Aguero, Kompany, Fernandinho...are all signings pre-Pep coming in and he hasn't signed anybody that is a worthy replacement for any of them and they're now much nearer to the end of their careers

What do people think of the single tie format as opposed to the two-legged style?

I've enjoyed it more than I expected. Reminds me of a World Cup or Euros, though I'm conflicted because I'm also a big fan of the drama the away goals rule provides.

Pros and Cons

Very much enjoying the "one-off" nature to some of the games and making teams go for it more on the night. More attacking games in the Champions League for sure. I haven't seen enough other Europa League games to comment there.

But, there is a big caveat that this season's European competitions were altered midway through the competition and it changed to one leg ties reducing the "second chance" factor that has always been a feature. The second leg has always been a big appeal to European competitions IMO.

The real question now is how much do City spend next year to try win the Champions League?
Does it matter how much they spend on defenders if they are not coached properly?
