No new deaths in Scotland from Covid-19 for first time since before lockdown

That's probably true, but the fact is the Scottish Government have been afraid to make any kind of meaningful decision throughout. Cautious about going into lockdown, cautious about coming out.

Being wrong about cautiously going into lockdown doesn't mean they're wrong about being cautious coming out of lockdown. While they've clearly got things to learn it's better to be safe than sorry as we start to ease things off.

Being cautious coming out isn't such a bad thing, but one of the measures of success in managing this is about the timing going in and the timing of coming out. It's easy to be 'successful' in suppressing the virus if you have the longest lockdown in Europe, but what are the consequences?

I agree with that point. That's the balance every government has to reach regardless of how good/bad they've done in applying the lockdown in the first place. I don't envy the Scottish Government in that sense.

I'm not Nicola Sturgeon's biggest fan but I'm not really sure what folk expect, saving certain failures common to quite a lot countries might have been avoided (care home issues in particular).

But regarding lockdown and easing off, in general, of course, every country's message sounds the same. They're opening up the same stuff, they have very similar institutions (educational, legal etc) and social habits etc. Lockdown relaxations are going to look pretty fuckin similar in most places.

In fact, the only dispute to be had is about the pace of opening these things back up and very emphatically she's trying to slow this a bit while it appears the English can't wait to push folk back whether it makes sense or not.

Her strategy is as different as it can be really, and I say that as someone who thinks she's too cautious a lot of the time.

Where I live we are down to 4 known active cases. The government lifted some restrictions and allowed restaurants, salons, tattoo parlours, and other businesses to re-open as long as they follow guidelines (ensure 2 meter separation for customers, clean, and wear masks).

How long this stays this way is not dependant on the governments, but with us. "Play by the rules" and there should not be any issues. This is applies to most countries, I am sure. However; as we know there will be individuals that will not play by the rules, and this is where the problem lays.

The province of New Brunswick had 0 active cases for two weeks, they lifted restrictions, and one person (a doctor of all people), left the province and went to Quebec (the hardest hit province) to pick up his daughter. He returned and did not self-isolate and went back to work at his hospital. The result: New Brunswick now has 15 active cases, including the doctor and his daughter. One person did not play by the rules, and 15 are infected. Here lays the problem for all provinces, states, territories and countries.

Zero deaths in Scotland again in the last 24 hours but the restrictions for shielded people will be xtended until the end of July but from the 18th of June outdoor exercise is permitted. Still no contact with anyone outside the household though. And for everyone else, it looks like there could be some restrictions eased on 18th June (phase 2).

I see New Zealand are ready to go "back to normal" now they have had no new cases for 17 days and, on top of that, no one in hospital with it.

Hopefully we will see some restrictions eased next week.

The downside for New Zealand is their economy depends on tourism. It'll be interesting to see what they implement to allow tourists back in.

I think this is quite a staggering achievement.

She did an extraordinary job. Hopefully other world leaders will learn from her.
