I have no idea how they are going to enforce lockdown restrictions on people over the next week.

A family over the road have 4 grown-up kids, all with partners and at least 7 grandkids. Yesterday at least 12 were around for Xmas day. Today another load of people turned up, obviously, they don't care about the restrictions and I'm sure there are plenty more people like that around the country.

Hogmanay and New Year's Day will be even worse.

Selfishness more than anything.

A lot of people won't comply with the restrictions between Christmas and New Year. I was out walking the dogs today and the amount of cars on the road was unreal for a country that is in lockdown - they couldn't all have been going grocery shopping!!

I've also seen houses full of people having parties - pathetic really.

We don't have any definite evidence of the new strain here in Ontario yet, but I know our labs are watching for it. We went into a lockdown today just based on current epidemiological criteria of the current strain(s) so I guess we are already ready for it if it shows its ugly mug. Long list of rules, but basically all non-essential businesses are closed and there are tight rules around any kind of gathering, even outdoors.
Aaaand I spoke too soon. Four confirmed cases of the new variant in Canada, two related to travel to the UK, two unknown how they even got Covid, let alone this strain.

Highest number ever recorded on Scotland today and in the UK on a whole 53,135 new Covid cases were recorded as well as 414 more deaths within 28 days of a positive test. (Not all data was reported in full over the Christmas period, leading to a lag in some data, but health ministers said there had been a "real increase").

I would say we are heading into a nationwide lockdown - there is no sense in the individual governments making their own rules and coming out of mini lockdowns at different times.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, with the first doses due to be given on Monday amid rising coronavirus cases.

The UK has ordered 100 million doses - enough to vaccinate 50 million people.

This would cover the entire population when combined with the full order of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

This genuinely feels like a key moment in this whole thing. The Pfizer vaccine was obviously good news but the Oxford vaccine was always going to be the game-changer.

Can't mind if it was said when the Pfizer vaccine was approved, but if this really is as significant as we're told, to go from novel virus, thousands dying, world shutting down, economies tanking, real end of days stuff to multiple vaccines with 90%+ effectiveness created, manufactured and rolled out in the space of roughly a year has to go down as one of science's greatest achievements of all time.

Vaccine rollout is going rather slowly here, but it is happening. I wish we could speed it up. My province and my city both set dubious records. Ontario broke 3000 new cases in a day for the first time and London, Ontario broke 100 for the first time (we hit exactly 100 a couple days ago).

New cases have been rising in Scotland over the past week. There have been a record numbers of positive cases for the last two days (2,088 and 2,644) and deaths (57 and 64).

And the UK as a whole has recorded 53,135 (981 deaths) and 55,894 (964 deaths) over the past two days.

Hopefully by July 2021 most of the people in the UK will have received the vaccine and some sort of normality will be on the horizon.

I am amazed at those positive case numbers from the past two days. How many people are still coming into contact with others? Where and how are they getting it?
