I am amazed at those positive case numbers from the past two days. How many people are still coming into contact with others? Where and how are they getting it?

Yeah, we are having a big surge here and it started almost exactly a week after Christmas. Which, I hope, means it will die down a bit once we get to mid-January. The whole province is locked down fairly hard until January 25 and I am already hearing speculation the government will have to extend it.

From midnight tonight, Scotland is going back into full lockdown for the remainder of the month.

From Tuesday all household mixing will be banned indoors and a maximum of two people over the age of 11 will be allowed to meet outdoors.

It will be illegal for anyone to leave home unless taking part in essential work, essential shopping, exercise, or visiting an extended household bubble.

Schools will also remain closed to most pupils for the rest of January, with a review taking place on January 18th on whether schools can re-open in February.

Yes, it is disappointing but I've a feeling that these restrictions will remain in place until the "most vulnerable" have all been vaccinated and that will more than likely be beyond the end of January.

Generally, when the government starts 'considering' new actions, they happen about a week later.

They have just announced the highest ever daily figures for deaths and cases of covid-19 in the UK.

1325 deaths and 68053 new cases.

The R number has risen to between 1.0 and 1.4

The UK death toll passes 80,000 as experts call for a further tightening of restrictions.

I'm not really sure how this has gotten so out of control - the whole country was almost in total lockdown throughout December.
