Escape from Tarkov
Escape from Tarkov is set in the fictional Norvinsk region in north-western Russia, around a "Special economic zone" that served as a gateway between Russia and Europe. However, this attracted corporations with dubious intent, and the city of Tarkov became the center for a major political scandal involving corrupt corporations in the Norvinsk region. Six months later the situation erupted into an armed conflict involving the Internal Troops of Russia, United Nations peacekeepers, and two private military companies: United Security (USEC) and BEAR. The Norvinsk region's borders were sealed off, and those trapped in the middle of the local warfare were isolated from the outside world. USEC was hired by the Terra Group, one of the corrupt corporations involved in the scandal, to hinder investigations during the conflict, while BEAR was hired by the Russian Government to uncover evidence about Terra Group.

The player has the titular objective of escaping the city of Tarkov by working for one of these private military companies.

Been playing it since before Christmas, It's good. But the server lag and net code sucks. I've been getting some deaths that are nothing short of frustrating. But the idea for the game is awesome and I really enjoy it

Battlestate Games has teased some big news on its YouTube channel. It appears that Escape From Tarkov 1.0 is finally set to release this year.

Known for its ruthlessly realistic gameplay, with detailed ballistics and unforgiving survival mechanics, the game stands apart from typical shooters. It's praised by players tired of simplified FPS titles that prioritise mass appeal over authentic gunplay and immersion.

Several shots from the teaser video suggested that the Escape From Tarkov 1.0 release date is set for November 15, 2025.

The game director of Escape From Tarkov, Nikita Buyanov, recently outlined the anticipated updates for the game through the end of 2025. Despite the rocky start following its 1.0 launch on November 15, which was marred by server issues and a "Mixed" rating on Steam, there are exciting developments on the horizon.

In a recent update, Buyanov emphasised that Battlestate Games is committed to prioritising fixes and improvements. Players can expect:
  • A winter-themed update in Tarkov
  • New storyline quests and events
  • A special New Year TarkovTV event in December
  • The introduction of a seasonal character system, although this will arrive after the initial updates
While the seasonal character feature won't be part of the immediate updates for 2025, it hints at a vibrant future for Escape From Tarkov. Additionally, the game is set to launch on consoles and offer its first post-launch DLC, Scav Life, although these developments may not be realised until late 2026.

Overall, despite the challenges faced at launch, the roadmap suggests that Battlestate Games is dedicated to enhancing the player experience. The coming months could be pivotal for the game's community, paving the way for what might be a thrilling 2026.

While the game retains its captivating yet punishing gameplay, it is also showing significant signs of age and technical issues.

The game remains true to its roots, offering no hand-holding for players. Newcomers are thrown into a brutal environment without guidance, which can be both thrilling and exasperating. The lack of clarity in progression systems and essential map information makes mastering the game feel like an uphill battle. A seasoned player might find beauty in its exacting design and the rewarding nature of learning through failure, but many newcomers are likely to be left frustrated.

The launch has not been smooth. Players are reporting server issues, including long wait times and frequent disconnects, compounded by the persistent problem of cheating due to the real-money trading of accounts and items. Moreover, the game's graphics and performance feel outdated, with blurry textures and poorly designed character models detracting from the immersive experience.

It looks like Battlestate Games has rolled out a new update for Escape from Tarkov, and there's quite a bit to unpack. Update 1.0.4.5 brings some notable improvements and tweaks that are sure to make our gaming experiences smoother and more enjoyable.

What's New?
Here's a quick rundown of the key changes:
  • The FPS limit in menus has been lifted, which should help with smoother navigation.
  • Improvements have been made to the animation system, making character movements feel more fluid.
  • The audio engine has also seen some upgrades, aimed at optimising how the game uses PC resources.
These changes are definitely going to enhance gameplay, especially with the FPS boost in menus, which can be a bit clunky at times. Plus, who doesn't love a more responsive audio experience when you're trying to sneak up on an enemy or hear that telltale sound of footsteps?

Changes
  • Improvements aimed at optimising off-raid screens;
  • Increased the FPS limit in menus and added an option to adjust it in the game settings;
  • Several changes to the animation system and audio engine to improve PC resource usage;
  • Reworked the architecture of post-raid systems to further reduce the time required to exit a raid and return to the menu;
  • As part of optimisation efforts, an updated player culling system has been implemented on Lighthouse, Shoreline, Woods, and Ground Zero. The system will be introduced to the remaining locations in future updates;
  • Implemented an iteration of the environment object and geometry optimisation for Streets of Tarkov to improve location performance;
Please note that the impact of these changes will depend on your PC configuration and in-game settings.
  • Introduced a task progression protection system in local PvE Zone raids in case of unexpected client shutdowns. If the game closes unexpectedly, task progress will now revert to the state at the start of the raid;
  • Updated the left-shoulder firing stance logic. Switching to the right shoulder will no longer happen instantly when colliding with obstacles. Instead, the weapon will continue moving for a short period without changing stance;
  • Updated the K/D display in character stats. It now counts player kills only.
Balancing changes

With this update, we introduce the second stage of weapon mod adjustments, focusing on barrels and handguards. Muzzle devices and stocks were further adjusted based on the first iteration.

Barrels follow the same principle as before. Longer barrels provide greater recoil reduction but impose higher ergonomics penalties. Changes were made to:
  • Standardise parameters and make them clearer.
  • Make the choice between short and long barrels more meaningful.
Handguards no longer reduce recoil. Their role is now to offset ergonomics penalties imposed by barrels.

Muzzle devices were further refined following the first iteration. Suppressors and their combinations with compensators now reduce ergonomics more and affect recoil less. These changes are intended to further increase the popularity of unsuppressed weapon builds. Adjustments to muzzle flash are planned for future updates.

Buttstocks received minor adjustments, mainly addressing inaccuracies and issues from the first iteration.

Base characteristics of many weapons have been updated to better align with the new balance. Recoil and ergonomics have been improved for the following:
  • All AK, AKM, and AK-100 series weapons;
  • Steyr AUG A1;
  • Steyr AUG A3;
  • HK G36;
  • HK 416A5;
  • FN SCAR-L;
  • FN SCAR-H;
  • SIG MCX-SPEAR;
  • SIG MCX .300;
  • CMMG Mk47 Mutant;
  • Rifle Dynamics RD-704;
  • Aklys Defense Velociraptor;
  • All machine guns;
  • All bolt-action and marksman rifles chambered in 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, .338, and .50 BMG.
Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where dead players and bots could appear to move visually in certain cases;
  • Fixed an issue where damage would not register after a weapon malfunction if the player had previously used a stationary weapon;
  • Fixed the cause of error 228 during trader dialogues that could block task progression;
  • Fixes to culling, shadows, textures, and location geometry;
  • Fixed an issue where armour could not be picked up if it was dropped while interacting with the modification window;
  • Fixed the incorrect behaviour of PMC bots toward player Scavs with Fence reputation 6 or higher in PvE Zone;
  • Fixed an issue preventing further progression in The Labyrinth after spawning in the room requiring a burner tool to exit;
  • Fixed the incorrect display of smoke grenades in the player's hands if another player threw a smoke grenade at them;
  • Fixed the display of changes in the "Combat Skill Levelling Boost" field in the Hall of Fame Hideout zone when one dogtag was replaced with another of a similar level;
  • Fixed an issue where PostFX settings would not display when preview was enabled;
  • Fixed an issue where some players could get stuck in the secret saferoom on Interchange without a way to exit;
  • Fixed the incorrect display of stationary weapons used by bots and multiple cases where bots could float while using them;
  • Fixed multiple issues with incorrect behaviour of loot and gear items when dropped in raid;
  • Fixed the display of current movement noise level and stance height during raids;
  • Fixed the third-person animation for inspecting your own inventory.
