How does the Europa League group stage work?
Teams in each group play each other twice, home and away, with the top two advancing to the round of 16.

The third-placed sides in each group transfer to the Europa Conference League knockout round play-offs, where they will face the Europa Conference League group runners-up for a place in the last 16 of that competition.

Wins tonight for West Ham 1-0 against Olympiakos, Brighton beat Ajax 2-0 in Holland and Rangers won 2-1 at Ibrox against Sparta Prague. but Liverpool lost 3-2 in France to Toulouse.

Ajax aren't a great team at moment, but take nothing away from Brighton they are a really solid side. I thought they looked good under Potter, but with De Zerbi they've moved to a different level.

Ridiculous start by Liverpool tonight in the second leg of thier tie with Sparta Prague. Already leading 5-1 from the first leg they scored 4 goals in the first 17 minutes on their way to a 11-2 aggregate victory.

Elsewhere, West Ham scored 5 against Freiburg on their way to a 5-1 aggregate scoreline. Brighton beat Roma 1-0 but lost 4-1 on aggregate. And Rangers lost 1-0 to Benfica at Ibrox and go out 3-2 on aggregate.

Rangers' loss could have dire implications for Scottish football. Despite Liverpool and Milan doing their part to help (gave the 2 Prague teams 0 points), things aren't looking good for Scotland. Viktoria Plzen only need 1 draw to drag Czechia above.

Scotland's automatic place in the Champions League for its champions now in serious doubt.

If Viktoria Plzen avoid defeat in either leg of their quarter-final tie in the QF of the UECL, the place will pass to Czechia as of 2025-26 (affecting next season's domestic champions).
