Overview: The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.

I'm quietly optimistic, but I'm a huge A Song of Ice & Fire so I was always going to watch it.

The dialogue in the trailer was pretty good. Still, I don't know how I feel about investing my energy into this if the showrunners start writing their own shit a la The Witcher S2 and GoT S7/8.

Viserys hosts a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. Rhaenyra welcomes her uncle Daemon back to the Red Keep.

Liked that as a starter and it was a straightforward laying out of the lie of the land. Hard to say if anybody is awful but I can see how Matt Smith might get on people's nerves. Like GOT it'll be where the overall season evolves and it will be interesting to see how the change in actresses works with the planned time shift.

One thing I did like was the reworking of the GOT theme. Fits nicely into this.

I thought it was a decent start. Well cast, well acted, set up the characters fairly well. It is annoying that it seems like every family has about 5 base names and everyone is just named a variance of it, which makes it difficult enough to track some characters or recognise previous mentions of them.

I thought Matt Smith was fantastic. He plays snide and scheming pretty well. The only issue I had was it nearly felt like him and the young actress were being dubbed when speaking Valyerian.

The actual dragons I feel are going to be fairly boring and I hope they're used sparingly, but a show about scheming and plotting for the throne and just the machinations of that world without having to aim towards the crescendo of Night King/Mad Queen has a lot of promise.

Thought episode 1 was decent. Better than I thought it would be. No interesting characters as yet really but plenty of potential

I turned on the subtitles in the hope they would include in the name of the person speaking. They didn't. In fact the subtitles were a mess. It wasn't always clear who was speaking.

Thought it was a pretty good opening episode, that intercut scene was pretty harrowing.

Matt Smith seems to be polarising but by all accounts its a pretty polarising character so will be interesting to see how it develops

Brilliant start. Violent, bloody, intense. Scheming and political. Strong Game of Thrones season 3 and 4 vibes.

The Rogue Prince
Season: 1
Episode: 2
Air date: 2022-08-28

Guest stars: Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Graham McTavish, David Horovitch, Bill Paterson, Gavin Spokes, Andrew Bicknell, Nova Foueillis-Mosé, Anthony Flanagan, Daniel Scott-Smith
Princess Rhaenyra dives deep into the prophecies about House Targaryen while confronting a realm that resists the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne, and Prince Daemon, embittered over being passed over as the heir to Westeros, prepares to go to war.

Second episode is excellent. So many interesting ways this could develop. Can't wait for next week. Hope they can manage to sustain pace and momentum over the course of ten episodes.
