Infantino's Future Uncertain After World Cup Sell-off Fiasco Soccer

FIFA's stake sale plan faces fierce backlash from UEFA and members.
7/10 Heated debate

The post provides a detailed overview of FIFA's new financial plans, but it could benefit from clearer organization and a more concise format. Overall, it adds valuable context for the community regarding financial changes in FIFA.

FIFA UEFA World Cup stake sale corruption

FIFA's announcement of a plan to sell a minority stake in a new company handling its major events has sparked outrage among football associations and stakeholders. Many fans and officials question the integrity of such a move, especially following previous scandals. The proposed financial incentives for national associations to support the plan has raised further concerns regarding transparency and corruption.12

Critics argue that increased private interests will dilute the quality of the World Cup, leading to higher ticket prices and a focus on profit over integrity. The response from UEFA has been swift, with suggestions for a complete boycott of the World Cup if FIFA proceeds. The call for drastic reform in football governance has gained traction among the dissenters, reflecting widespread discontent.34

Reports of a potential boycott by European nations indicate serious ramifications for FIFA's commercial plans. While immediate pushback is evident, there remains skepticism about whether this movement will lead to meaningful change. Observers note that while the plan may be stalled, Infantino's grip on FIFA could persist despite the backlash, setting the stage for further battles ahead.56

"European nations have agreed to boycott the World Cup"

"Total reform is needed in football's governance"

Verdict

The proposed stake sale has encountered significant resistance, particularly from UEFA. While immediate consequences are likely, the long-term governance of FIFA remains uncertain.

It's dead.

FIFA and Gianni Infantino have performed a U-turn on his plot to sell a stake in its commercial and event operations after widespread condemnation of the plans.

In a statement, Infantino said: "Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place."

Surely his position is untenable now?

The English Football Association (FA) is poised to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino's re-election as FIFA president. This move aligns the FA with Wales, which has already taken a similar stance.

Opponents of FIFA president Gianni Infantino are threatening "non-co-operation" with the governing body unless he steps down, according to senior UEFA sources. Some of those involved in the rebellion vow "there is no going back" for as long as Infantino remains in position, as the fallout over his scrapped plans to sell off stakes in Fifa competitions to private investors intensifies.

While the details of the proposed disruption remain unclear, one senior figure said they would "certainly expect" a refusal to participate in FIFA meetings.

It comes after European football's governing body UEFA threatened legal action over the proposals, and Wales publicly withdrew backing for Infantino's bid for a fourth term as Fifa president, with England's Football Association set to follow suit.

In March, Infantino is set to stand for re-election for a final term as president and would need 106 votes from FIFA's 211 members to win.

Infantino's leadership had already been publicly questioned by football's governing bodies in Europe, North and Central America and the Caribbean, with UEFA and CONCACAF releasing statements criticising the plans.

As the pressure grows on Infantino, with Serbia, Sweden and Finland also withdrawing their support, Morocco, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Sri Lanka are among the countries to have pledged their support for his FIFA leadership to continue.

UEFA has 55 votes, Africa 54, Asia 46, CONCACAF 35, Oceania 11 and CONMEBOL 10.

The Asian Football Federation (AFC) has said it stands in "solidarity" with UEFA and CONCACAF, while Africa, CONMEBOL and Oceania have not criticised Infantino's plan.

However, the FIFA Council could try to force Infantino to resign through an emergency meeting.

That would be triggered if 19 of the 37 FIFA Council members call for one, and the meeting must take place within two weeks.

UEFA has nine members, AFC has seven, CONCACAF five, Africa has six, ONMEBOL five and Oceania three. It is completed by Infantino and secretary general Mattias Grafstrom.

It seems Infantino has gone running to the US government thinking they can save his job. He's meeting with Rubio apparently. Funny thing about the article is it says Trump has being ingnoring his calls. He clearly doesn't understand that he promised Trump and his cronies lots of money from the WC sale. With that gone Trump has no interest in you anymore.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants the Trump administration to help keep him in office and has sought private talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio Monday amid growing pressure to resign over his scheme to sell off the World Cup to Josh Kushner's private equity firm, The Post has learned.

"He wanted to get online with the secretary and talk about how soccer can be a form of soft power for America," said one insider briefed on the matter. "But we all know that it is about job protection. It is not about anything else at this point."

A second source said the Swiss-Italian sports suit felt "isolated" by the avalanche of negative media coverage.

"He is looking for allies of note to publicly support him," this person said.

Two sources familiar with the matter said Infantino hoped to hold a call with America's top diplomat on Monday morning. The State Department denied the confab was taking place, and it hadn't occurred by the afternoon.

"There are no plans for @SecRubio to speak with Infantino and there is no call this morning," a spokesman wrote on X.

A senior source at the global soccer body insisted the call had been scheduled but was axed after the "unwanted attention" generated by The Post's exclusive reporting. A State Department official denied that, as well.

Sources say that Infantino, 56, has repeatedly tried and failed to reach Trump, 80, by phone since his plan to sell off the game's commercial assets to private investors collapsed on Friday.

Gianni Infantino has summoned FIFA's senior leadership staff to a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday (August 5 2026) in the wake of fierce internal criticism following his failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan.

Infantino was last week forced to scrap a proposal to make stakes in the world soccer governing body's commercial and event operations available for private investment after an overwhelming global backlash that is now threatening his position as president.

Is he going to try to wriggle out of this?

President of the Jordanian FA is throwing out some heavy accusations. Wonder if some of the smaller federations will say something similar:

"It is clear the problem really is with (the) leadership," continued Prince Ali, who ran unsuccessfully against Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency in 2015 and then against Infantino and Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa in 2016.

"For months, FIFA has been refusing to help us on any of these or other matters until it was verbally communicated to me, during the World Cup, that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out.

"We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that."

This is one of many, no doubt.

He's a dead man walking, hopefully.

Gianni Infantino has received "full support" from FIFA's senior leadership staff following a crisis meeting in Morocco on Wednesday.

The meeting took place after Infantino was forced to scrap his FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal.

That plan would have made stakes in the world soccer governing body's commercial and event operations available for private investment, but was abandoned after an overwhelming global backlash that is now threatening his position as president of world football's governing body.

Of course he did. I wonder what UEFA and the other associations do now.

I'm not surprised. This all came out yesterday before the meeting.

This isn't an Infantino problem. This is a FIFA problem.

The fact hes done all this shit and it's only surfacing now shows the whole organization is broken and needs to be scrapped.

We all spoke about overhauls needed when Blatter was ousted, it clearly just got worse.
