Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United.

The Portuguese's final game of his 14-month spell as head coach was the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, which leaves them sixth in the Premier League after 20 matches.

Former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis, with his first game being away at Burnley on Wednesday night. A permanent appointment is likely to wait until the summer.

The club's leadership team, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, arrived at the decision after a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.

As per the terms in the deal Amorim signed to leave Sporting CP for United in November 2024, there is no clause present to enable a discounted exit, meaning United will have to pay up his contract in full. It was set to run until 2027 with the option of a further year.

A club statement officially announced Amorim's departure, saying the decision had "reluctantly" been made because it is "the right time to make a change" to "give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future," the statement added.

Amorim recently hinted at tensions with those working alongside him, making clear in his post-match press conference after the 1-1 draw against Leeds that he considered himself the "manager" of United, not the "coach".

"It's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change," Amorim added. "That was my point. I want to finish with that. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me."

The news of Ruben Amorim's sacking is certainly a notable event in the realm of Manchester United and its fans. After just 14 months in charge, Amorim struggled to bring the desired results despite some promising early signs when he first took over the managerial role. The 1-1 draw against Leeds United, a match in which supporters had hoped for more, seemed to be the final straw for the club's leadership.

Amorim's tenure at United was marked by inconsistency, and the team's position sixth in the Premier League after 20 matches reflects a significant drop from expectations. With the squad's considerable talent and resources, the inability to challenge the top spots in the league is a glaring issue. His managerial style and the inability to effectively motivate or organize the players may have contributed to this decline.

The decision taken by CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox signals a broader trend of urgency within the club to restore stability and competitiveness. The acknowledgment of a breakdown in relations behind the scenes suggests deeper issues may have existed, influencing not only team performance but also the overall morale and cohesion within the club.

Darren Fletcher, stepping in as the interim head coach, brings with him an intimate understanding of the club, having played at Old Trafford and more recently serving as the Under-18s coach. His immediate challenge will be to redirect the focus and energy of a squad that may feel unsettled by the recent upheaval. The upcoming match against Burnley will be a critical test for Fletcher, as he seeks to instill confidence and hope among the players and supporters alike.

The financial implications of Amorim's contract are also significant; the lack of an exit clause means that United will incur a costly financial burden. It highlights the challenges associated with managerial transitions, particularly when a club invests heavily in their recruitment.

While the club's official statement thanked Amorim for his contributions, it also indicates a clear desire for a change that can reinvigorate the team's prospects. As the club looks to find a permanent successor, the focus should be on someone who can navigate both the tactical demands of the Premier League and the intricate dynamics of the club's culture—key attributes that were perhaps lacking under Amorim's management.

Fans are certainly eager to see what the future holds, not just for the team, but also in the ongoing project aimed at reclaiming Manchester United's place at the very top of English football. The prospect of a fresh managerial approach should bring a sense of cautious optimism, provided the right candidate is identified and appointed in due course. In the meantime, all eyes will be on Fletcher and how he steers the team through this transitional period.

He deserved the sack for their poor form but his press conference statement is probably why they decided now was the right time. Doesn't matter who you put in charge, the club behind the scenes is rotten.

Once the hysteria of getting rid of the statistically worst manager in the club's modern history wears off, there needs to be serious, serious questions asked about the background operation that hired him in the first place.

Doesn't matter who you put in charge, the club behind the scenes is rotten.
Totally agree with this.

His record says it all really.

Win %38.1

His win percentage of 38.1 is the seventh-lowest of any non-caretaker manager in the club's history (24 men have taken charge of United full-time), and in the past 50 years, only Ralf Rangnick has had a worse record than Amorim. If the Portuguese had remained in charge for the visit to Burnley on Wednesday, and if United had failed to win, then his record would have slipped below the German's.

Looking at league games only, Amorim's record is even worse. United were victorious in just 15 of their 47 Premier League games under him; a win percentage of 31.9.

He managed back-to-back wins just once. He managed back-to-back defeats 5 times in the league.

They may have made some progress this season, but it feels like it was one step forward, two steps back.

Manchester United have reached agreement in principle to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season.

The deal, which includes the former midfielder's proposed staff, is subject to finalising contract details with an announcement expected soon.
