Resident Evil 4
Survival is just the beginning.

See how Resident Evil 4 is evolving ahead of its release on March 24th, 2023.

Resident Evil 4 joins Leon S. Kennedy six years after his hellish experiences in the biological disaster of Raccoon City. His unmatched resolve caused him to be recruited as an agent reporting directly to the president of the United States. With the experience of multiple missions on his back, Leon is dispatched to rescue the president's recently kidnapped daughter. Leon tracks her to a secluded European village, however after making first contact he discovers a fervor beyond reason grips the local populace. As a title that set the standard for the later Resident Evil franchise, the original Resident Evil 4 introduced the third-person camera to the long-running series, which has shipped over 127 million units worldwide since the first title debuted in 1996.

Now, this reimagined tale of survival in the face of overwhelming terror returns to deliver a visually stunning modern gaming experience that is true to the promise of the original release. Many team members from the production of 2019's top-selling and critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 also make their return to delve deeper into the essence of Resident Evil 4. Fans and newcomers alike can revel in both the new and familiar, as RE Engine heightens the design and creative direction of the original game.

The post provides useful information and updates on Resident Evil 4, but could benefit from more context and detail regarding the sources. Overall, it's informative but lacks depth.

constructive informational consensus
Resident Evil 4 remake gameplay demo graphics

Initial discussions centered around the new features of the remake, including the absence of QTEs and enhancements to AI companion Ashley. Posters expressed curiosity about how these changes would impact gameplay and immersion.12

As players began experiencing the demo, opinions varied. Some praised the visual upgrades and did not find it as scary as other titles in the franchise, while others enjoyed the familiar yet revamped atmosphere of RE4.34

In the latter parts of the discussion, users reflected on their experiences with gameplay mechanics, with some highlighting issues like control responsiveness while others affirmed the game's faithfulness to the original experience.56

"I think the answer is a resounding YES"

"I’d class it more as an action horror"

Verdict

While the remake has generated excitement, viewpoints on gameplay mechanics were mixed, and concerns about controls were noted. Overall, players remain cautiously optimistic as they anticipate its full release.

Some new info from Game Informer (via other non-paywalled sites);
  • No QTEs, at least not in the style of the original game i.e. button mashing to onscreen prompts
  • There will be optional mini-side quests
  • Ashley will be less vulnerable - they say she will now "feel more like a natural companion and less like a second health bar to babysit"
  • Knives can break, but spares can be carried in inventory
I'll be waiting for the reviews. I got burned on RE3 remake and I'm not making that mistake again. That said, no more QTEs can only be a good thing.

A new gameplay trailer was released last week

Looks great, I'll probably buy it at some point but my games backlog is ridiculous right now!

I just can't see this being anything other than great. Played the original on GameCube and it was fantastic and this looks brilliant.

Yeah, it does. Was just remembering the motion controls which were great for a game like that as it made it even more immersive. Just like the touchpad for ZombiU on the WiiU which you had to look down at when opening a backpack or looking at the map.

I was no fan of the castle section back then so hopefully they improve that one.

Nice little demo. Visually it looks great and captured the sound and atmosphere well. Shooting mechanics are feeling good though Leon moves a little stiff/unresponsive at times.

Didnt manage to kill the Chainsaw guy but I put a few holes in him.

So, yeah, looking good.

Played enough to know it's gonna be excellent (got to the village and fought the horde), skipped all cutscenes.

Oddly the start feels like 7 but then it's full on RE4, placement of everything feels similar as does story beats. I do really like the stealth kills

Can't ask for much more from a remake tbh, roll on end of March.

Really liked the demo but I had the same thoughts until I changed the shooting aim to be quicker on my second playthrough and it was far more comfortable in terms of aiming the gun. It felt so slow prior to that.

I forgot how anxiety inducing that village section is (running around waiting for the bell to ring)

They've done a great job of keeping that anxiety in the village section.
