More details about Resident Evil 8's gameplay, plot, and enemies have been confirmed in the Japanese magazine, Famitsu.

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine has run a feature on the upcoming Xbox Series X, PS5 and PC game, Resident Evil Village.

A key member of the Resident Evil online community, Alex Aniel, has translated the key takeaways from the game's producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano. There are some light spoilers below, so look away now if you want to go into the game as fresh as possible.

 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1316401144701181953

Via the translated thread, Famitsu confirms Chris Redfield is responsible for bringing Ethan Winters to the titular village Resident Evil 8 is set in. Ethan finds himself here – apparently against his will – after some time has passed.

A sect of cult-like villagers are apparently featured in the game, and employ the use of 'dangerous creatures' to protect them.

There is what appears to be a merchant in a trenchcoat – classic! – that'll sell items to Ethan on his journey through the spooky setting. Ethan's life 'will depend on this character', in some way.

The dangerous, werewolf-like creatures spotted in the recent trailer (below) don't communicate with language, but do apparently have a sort of 'pack mentality' and can wield weapons. Just to make them particularly deadly, then.

Resident Evil 8 is due to launch in 2021 for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. There is currently no word on whether the game will arrive on current-gen consoles.

A new listing for Resident Evil Village over on the official Microsoft Store has confirmed the game's file size on Xbox platforms.

The store page lists key info such as price, release date, and pre-order bonuses, as well as the file size for Resident Evil Village, which weighs in at a reasonable 50.02GB.

There's a good chance the actual Resident Evil Village file size will be a little beefier following a potential day one patch though we've yet to get the confirmation via Capcom. Expect the PlayStation versions of Resi 8 to be floating around the 50GB mark, too.

It's worth noting that this includes both the singleplayer Resident Evil Village as well as Re:Verse, the complimentary online multiplayer mode which Capcom has bundled in. On its own, the Re:Verse file size is 15GB which brings Village's size down to around 35GB.

Capcom kicked off today's Resident Evil Showcase with a fresh trailer. This video is made up almost entirely of new footage. Once the video is live, we will pop it in here for you.

There's a particular focus on narrative here compared to previous trailers. We are introduced the townsfolk who call the eponymous village home. They appear to be living in fear of the same people and monsters chasing Ethan around.

The next Resident Evil Village demo looks even more meaty than the one from earlier this year.

The demo will be available on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia. This limited-time demo will only be available for one day. During that window, you'll be able to play it for just up to one hour.

The demo includes access to the village itself, and the surrounding castle areas. You can explore either of those locations and do whatever you want, all within the 60-minute time limit.

Here's when you can play:
  • North America: May 1 at 5pm PT, 8pm ET until May 2.
  • Europe: May 2 at 1am UK, 2am CEST until May 3.
  • Asia: May 2 at 8am HKT until May 3.
PlayStation owners on PS4 and PS5 will get early access to the same demo, only it's going to be split into two 30-minute chunks covering each of the two areas. This demo includes the same content as the multi-platform demo, essentially allowing PlayStation players to try the content out twice.

Capcom is calling it 8 Hours in Village, because it's going to be available for only eight hours as opposed to a full day. The village demo goes live first, offering PlayStation fans 30 minutes of game time to explore that area. It kicks off this weekend, and you can pre-load it right now on PlayStation.

Here's the schedule:
  • North America: April 17 at 5pm PT, 8pm ET to 1am PT, 4am ET on April 18.
  • Europe: April 18 at 4pm UK, 5pm CEST to 12am UK, 1am CEST on April 19.
  • Asia: April 18 at 5pm HKT until 1am on April 19.
The week after, the castle demo will go live, also exclusively for PlayStation. Likewise, you'll get just 30 minutes of playtime, limited to the castle areas.
  • North America: April 24 at 5pm PT, 8pm ET to 1am PT, 4am ET on April 25.
  • Europe: April 25 at 4pm UK, 5pm CEST to 12am UK, 1am CEST on April 26.
  • Asia: April 25 at 5pm HKT until 1am on April 26.

Resident Evil Village is bringing back The Mercenaries, and a lot of fresh ideas.

As part of this week's Resident Evil Showcase, Capcom announced the return of The Mercenaries mode, which will be available in the upcoming Resident Evil Village at launch.

In Village, The Mercenaries will offer an arcade-style, action-focused take on the game's combat, taking you through its many locations and pitting you against the monsters you'll come across over the course of the main story.

If you're unfamiliar, Mercenaries sessions are made up of small chunks where you're tasked with taking out a certain number of enemies within a time limit. All your actions are being scored, putting a different spin on things.

New this time around is a shop, which you'll be able to access between areas. In this case, it's the Duke's Emporium from the main game. The shop lets you spend earned money on new weapons, explosives and even healing items. You can also use the Duke's Emporium to upgrade your weapons.

And in an even bigger twist, The Mercenaries mode also now includes ability pick-ups, which you'll find throughout the levels. These offer gameplay bonuses to your character, such as increasing long-range damage, buffing specific weapons, and even boosting movement speed and healing.

The trailer above shows off a good chunk of what you can expect, and it does look to be packed with content.

Several crucial new details about the game have recently emerged, and here, we're going to talk about some of them.

ENVIRONMENTS
Capcom have previously said that Resident Evil Village is going to be a significantly larger game than Resident Evil 7- but it seems set to be larger than most, if not all, other games in the series as well. Speaking recently with Game Informer for their RE Village cover story, the developers confirmed that the game will have the largest environments in the series' history. And we're not just talking about how expansive they are in terms of area- they're going to be quite intricately designed as well, with the developers stating that environments in RE Village are also the most vertical the series has ever seen- which will come into play in combat encounters as well. Additionally, owing to the larger size of the areas, Ethan's movement speed in the game has also been increased, but to ensure that the game sticks to being a horror experience, Capcom have ramped up the intensity of encounters as well.

LYCANS
Enemy variety seems to be the name of the game in Resident Evil Village, and of the many, many different kinds of monstrosities Ethan will be squaring off against in the game, the werewolves – called Lycans – have to be some of the most intriguing. As revealed in the aforementioned Game Informer cover feature, Lycans will come in many shapes and sizes, and they will have different behaviours depending on the situation- if they're hunting you in a pack, they will be more aggressive, while if they're alone, they'll tend to hang back a little bit. Lycans can also hide in bushes and wait to ambush you, so you're always going to have to be on your toes.

MORE LYCAN DETAILS
Several more details also suggest that Lycans are going to be extremely formidable foes. For instance, it seems they're one of several ways Capcom is looking to leverage the larger and more vertical level design of Resident Evil Village. Lycans can move extremely fast and close long distances pretty quickly, which means putting some distance between you and them isn't always an easy way out. Meanwhile, Lycans can also climb up buildings and try and break through walls and barricades, so hiding out or looking for the high ground is also going to provide only temporary respite.

HUNTING
For the first time ever in a Resident Evil game, Village is also going to have a hunting mechanic. The titular village will have several animals in it, and they'll serve mechanical purposes as well. Players can hunt these animals and waste previous bullets, but the meat you get from them in return can be crucial. Take that meat to the Duke, who will cook up special meals for you that will upgrade your base stats, including your health, your movement speed, and your guard defence (which determines how much damage you take while you're guarding against incoming attacks).

WEAPON UPGRADES
Of course, the Duke will be able to upgrade more than your base stats- he will also upgrade your weapons. Using currency you get from killing enemies and exploring and looting the environments, you will be able to not only purchase new weapons, but also upgrade the ones you have. Each weapon will have standard upgrade options, of course, but you will also be able to purchase mods for certain weapons- such a cheek rest for a rifle to decrease its sway, or a hair trigger for a shotgun to increase its rate of fire, or a larger magazine for a handgun to increase its clip capacity.

PHOTO MODE
Capcom recently showed off Resident Evil Village gameplay for the PS4 Pro for the first time ever, courtesy of a video that was published by IGN- and while there's plenty to say about how its looking and performing on last-gen hardware, there is one pretty important thing that the video lets slip as well. During a specific cutscene, you can see an option for pressing the start button for a photo mode in the bottom right of the screen. A photo mode hasn't been officially confirmed by Capcom for the game yet, but seeing as this comes directly from the game itself, a formal confirmation seems like a formality at this point.

THE MERCENARIES
In 1999, Capcom introduced The Mercenaries with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and since then, it has grown into a beloved fan favourite. The time attack mode has appeared in new iterations several times in subsequent releases over the years, including Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6, and even spawned a standalone spinoff release in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for the 3DS. Fans have been begging for it to come back for a long time now (especially after its absence in last year's RE3 remake), and finally, Capcom have listened, confirming during the recent RE Showcase that Resident Evil Village will have a Mercenaries mode.

MORE MERCENARIES DETAILS
RE Village's take on The Mercenaries is going to throw several new elements into the mix. Players will move from area to area as you take on hordes of enemies from the game in time attack scenarios, which is familiar enough to anyone who's played the mode before. New this time, however, is the shop- between each area, you'll visit the Duke, and using the currency you've earned from previous rounds, you'll be able to purchase items and weapons, and upgrade the weapons you have in your arsenal. Meanwhile, each area will also have ability pickups, which can provide various buffs, such as increasing long-range damage, enhancing the damage of specific weapons, improving your healing, increasing your movement speed, and more.

Capcom has extended the Resident Evil Village multi-platform demo window by an extra week after fans complained the opportunity to play was too tight.

You may have noticed the particularly convoluted schedule Capcom organized for the second Resident Evil Village demo that allows you to play a portion of the game for up to 30 minutes.

At the time of its announcement, many players complained that the window to play the demo was too tight, and not really respectful of their time thanks to how awkward the publisher's timing was.

Well, it seems like someone at Capcom was listening because the company has announced it'll be significantly extending the demo window for its third (and final!) weekend.

The Maiden demo seemed good enough for me honestly. A discrete chunk of unique game; an incredible tech demo for the engine; and a tease for some of the characters and settings. Should have rolled that out more widely.

Starting now, bottled it and gone for standard difficulty.

Once you get past an early hump (a Big hump) it gets easier. You can change the difficulty too but only on the death screen. And that may only be a one-time pop-up option in that first chapter or something, mind.

What are people spending their Lei on? Don't want to waste any.

Fraser Enthusiast
Have only played up til the start of the castle, but it's decent so far. Surprised how much Resi 4 influence has snuck in. But very much a follow up to 7, for better and worse. There's something unsatisfying about shooting the Lycans with the pistol - the gun feels too weak, and their enemies' are too sporadic. But shooting was the worst part of 7 too. At least the shotgun still packs a wallop.
