We are thinking of getting a ring doorbell. I didn't realise just how many different ones there are!

We live in a quiet cul-de-sac so it's only really for if we're in our garden or not at home and a parcel arrives etc.

Preferably a battery one, not hard wired by choice.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice please.

We have the Ring video doorbell (2nd gen) which does all it needs to for us. We're also on a small cul-de-sac.

It alerts us to motion outside (you can set the detection area to as small or large as required), allows us to answer the doorbell, and talk to whoever's there and look at a live view at any time on our phones.

We fully charged the battery towards the end of July; we've just charged it again this week although it had only dropped to 30%.

Did you take out a subscription Jason?

We have a Eufy doorbell. Works well, requires charging about 4 times a year and everything is stored on the doorbell and not on a cloud-based system, so I don't have to pay to access my recordings.

We don't personally have a security doorbell but we did buy and set up them up for my parents and Eily's mum.

We decided to go with Tapo doorbells (we have 2 Tapo security cameras).

You can either use their cloud storage feature that requires a subscription or you can buy a microSD card and store the video footage on that instead. You can monitor the footage via an app on your phone or tablet or you can monitor via Alexa (maybe also Google Home)

The battery lasts for roughly 6 months.

I've been really impressed with Tapo devices since we bought the security cameras...the doorbells are also excellent.

We used to have Ring but changed to Blink along with external cameras. For our needs it is a much better set up and the batteries last for ages.
