US actor Chadwick Boseman, best known for playing Black Panther in the hit Marvel superhero franchise, has died of cancer aged 43.

He died at home in Los Angeles with his wife and family by his side, a statement posted on social media said.

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago but had not made the information public.

The news has left fans and the film world stunned. Get Out director Jordan Peele, said it was "a crushing blow".

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much," his family said in the statement.

"From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more - all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther."

Really, really sad news. Had no idea he even had cancer. There were questions about his weight loss but it was mostly dismissed as him preparing for a new film role. Horrible, horrible day in entertainment.

Absolutely tragic, testament to the man that he powered through that awful disease for 4 years and was still top of his game.

Awful news. Cancer is a terrible disease.

Imagine doing everything he has done over the last 3 or 4 years while privately battling this. Incredible strength. May he rest in peace.

This is so sad. It makes complete sense why he left the role of Black Panther now. 43 is absolutely nothing, he had a great talent and entertained millions.

Dreadful news. Such a talented actor, he did a great job playing the roles he did and was destined to have a great future ahead of him.

Very sad indeed. Black Panther was one of the more memorable Marvel efforts of the last few years for me.

He looked like an extremely fit man, hard to believe he was taken by cancer so young. Cancer is an absolute pox on humanity. I long for the day a cure is found.

Incredible that he managed to have the strength to perform so excellently in all of those pictures while going through what will have been a horrible experience for him and his family. He may have not reached the heights of Hollywood until late into his career but in that short space of time he played characters that will be remembered forever and that's a testament to him as an actor and a person
