So, here's the European counter-plan. Ukraine's NATO membership up to NATO; no territorial concessions; ceasefire along contact line; no cap on Ukrainian military; EU membership; reconstruction to be paid by Russia.

It's basically a full Ukrainian set of terms. It's simply going to get rejected, so it's more of a manifesto of support than a negotiation attempt. I don't think Putin is willing to have real negotiations anyway.

Ukraine spent the weekend in discussions with US officials, so there may be more to come soon.

Donald Trump has just posted on Truth Social, saying he's directing his envoy to meet Vladimir Putin and army secretary to meet with the Ukrainians.

This is being done, the US president says, "in the hopes of finalising this peace plan".

He adds that he will "hopefully" meet with both Zelenskyy and Putin "soon", but warns this will "ONLY" take place when the deal is complete, or in its final stages.

Kallas has more balls than the entire Trump administration.
Rubio and the rest of Trump's team are scared stiff of her. They daren't face her. She won't kow-tow to them 👏

Of course, Russia has rejected any proposals that are in Ukraine's "favour".

Putin is not ending this war in a stalemate. Given his age and given what it's cost so far, he's in far too deep now. He has publicly laid down a marker for an end state (Ukraine to surrender the five occupied regions). In reality, I think he would prefer to take all the territory to the Moldovan border in order to annex Transnistria, which is unlikely now.

I think he knows that if he ends this war, without forcing Ukraine to sign an agreement to cede the 5 occupied regions, or the vast majority of them at very least, his regime will not survive. Either he gets something he can genuinely sell as a victory (Ukraine to cede the 5 regions), or his legacy is toast. That is why he's willing to throw everything at this fight. This war is going to be his final defining moment in Russian history.

He's now back to saying Zelenskyy is illegitimate and he won't negotiate with him, saying his mandate had expired because of no elections were held. Putin knows perfectly well there can be no elections while fighting is ongoing, so this is just a ruse.

Hopefully, this isn't true, but sadly, I wouldn't put it past Trump.

From The Telegraph:

The United States is poised to recognise Russia's control over Crimea and other occupied Ukrainian territories to secure a deal to end the war.

The Telegraph understands that Donald Trump has sent his peace envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner to make the direct offer to Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The plan to recognise territory, which breaks US diplomatic convention, is likely to go ahead despite concerns among Ukraine's European allies.

One well-placed source said: "It's increasingly clear the Americans don't care about the European position. They say the Europeans can do whatever they want."

Russia's president on Thursday said Washington's legal recognition of Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as Russian territory would be one of the key issues in negotiations over the US president's peace plan.

The Kremlin on Friday said it had received a revised strategy for ending the war drawn up after emergency talks between Ukrainian and American officials in Geneva, Switzerland, last weekend.

An initial 28-point peace plan, formulated by Mr Witkoff after discussions with Russian officials, offered America's "de facto" recognition of Crimea and the two eastern Donbas regions.

The strategy also proposed "de facto" recognition of Russian-held land behind the line of contact in Ukraine's Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions after any ceasefire agreement.
