The development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been pretty peculiar, to say the least. Announced over a decade ago only to be scrapped soon thereafter, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was re-revealed back in 2018 as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl. The game was looking to finally launch in April of this year, but that will not be the case. It's now been confirmed that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been delayed to December 2022.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will now be released on December 8, 2022. Developer GSC Game World made the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 delay announcement in a post to its Twitter account.

 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1481279837469872129

These additional seven months of development are needed to fulfill our vision and achieve the desired state of the game. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is the biggest project in the history of GSC, and it requires thorough testing and polishing. We are convinced that development should take as long as necessary, especially in the case of such a project.

This decision is not an easy one, but we are doing the best possible to deliver you a game that can live up to the expectations

It's hard to ignore the coincidental timing of this delay announcement. Back in December of 2021, GSC Game World announced that they would be implementing NFTs into S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, news that was immediately met with strong backlash from fans. GSC quickly backtracked on the decision. It's unknown if the new delay has anything to do with the developer's scrapped NFT plans.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was originally set to launch in April, but has been delayed all the way to December 8, 2022.

Title Update 1.3.2 has been released. So, let's see what this patch brought to the table.

Patch 1.3.2 fixed an issue when NPCs did not use flashlights and did not notice the player for a long time. It also fixed an issue when NPCs could not reach their designated place outside the player's field of view which blocked some missions.

Update 1.3.2 also improved the game's stability. To be more precise, it fixed a crash that occurred at the top of Red Fortress during the The Last Wish mission. Plus, it comes with several bug fixes for main missions and side quests.

For what it's worth, this patch does not pack any performance improvements. It also won't fix or improve the A-Life 2.0 system. According to the game's roadmap (see above), we can expect some tweaks and improvements in the next couple of patches.

Main Story, Side Quests, and Encounters:

  • Fixed an issue where the Answers Come at a Price mission could not progress if the player fled from Depot during the attack and then looted Chornozem NPC.
  • Fixed an issue where the quest marker on Chornozem NPC could lead to the wrong location during the Answers Come at a Price mission.

The release of Patch 1.7 has emerged as a significant milestone for the game, enhancing performance dramatically across both PC and Xbox platforms. Originally launched with various technical issues, the game faced challenges that made it difficult to recommend, particularly due to CPU-bound performance dips and freezing on Xbox.

The latest patch, however, brings a refreshing change. With 19 mentions of "optimised" in the patch notes, players can expect smoother gameplay, improved frame rates, and a more stable experience overall. The Xbox Series X now confidently maintains a steady 60fps in performance mode, while the quality mode and Series S boast a solid 30fps without the previous frustrating freezes.

On the PC front, players can experience a 26% increase in performance, particularly in CPU-heavy scenarios. This uplift is complemented by more stable frame times, making the game much more enjoyable without the need to limit frame rates.

Looking ahead, there's anticipation for further upgrades, with plans to implement Unreal Engine 5.5.4 or later, which could bring even more enhancements to the game's visuals and performance.
