I hindsight and despite the money, the Floyd Mayweather fight was the worst thing that ever happened to him. While he was pissing around with that, making money, getting coked up and losing to Khabib, Poirier was busy actually fighting people, which is what you are meant to do.
Exactly. He effectively retired from UFC when he took the Mayweather fight.

How long since the Alvarez fight where he looked at his best ever, 5 years? That's a long time of inactivity, party lifestyle that you can't get back. Can't see him competing against the top guys anymore, maybe Nate 3 and call it a day.

I'm not very knowledgable on MMA, basically only watch the ppvs and good fight night cards but McGregor didn't look close to his best for me. As Marvin Hagler said it's tough to get out of your bed at 5am to do road work when you are sleeping in silk pyjamas.

Also seems pretty obvious that if you live the way McGregor reportedly did for two-three years it's going to make an impact on your performances.

Financially he's far better off but it is a pity he didn't stick to UFC, would have been interesting to see how close to Khabib a peak McGregor focused and living well could have got. Living the lifestyle he did and still being the only fighter to ever win a round against him speaks to the talent but sadly it wasn't matched by discipline.

I think he will probably have 3-4 more fight, some wins and losses and hope for his own sake wrap it up in the next year or so unless there is a drastic improvement.

Not really surprise by the result. People underestimated Dustin big time here. Khabib apart he's been the best lightweight on the planet for the last couple of years.

It's hard to see where McGregor goes from here, Poirier was the matchup that looked tailor made for him. Is he going to have the hunger for a few fights to build for a title run? Can he beat the top guys at LW?

I'd expect one of McGregor's famous retirement tweets in the coming weeks when the reality hits home. Only other option I see is Diaz 3

Watching the finishing sequence again, McGregor was actually eating some of the shots pretty well, but he miscalculated the last one and tried to duck and ended up dropping square onto it. Lovely stuff from Poirier.

A lot of talk about a rematch. I think he loses again if said rematch happens within a year. I would say he needs to be fed a few more guys like Donald Cerrone. Maybe even being in the middle of a card.

Even then, as has been noted, the lightweight division is stacked with killers.

Well that should be that for McGregor. Perhaps a retirement that is actually a retirement is required.

No doubt at his peak a great fighter and has done great work for the promotion and set himself up for life but enough is enough.

My big take away from that fight is less that Dustin is exceptional but rather that Conor is no longer that. Don't get me wrong Dustin is most certainly a great fighter and he earned that win but it's clear McGregor is way past his personal best. Doesn't really matter why, he just is.

We can talk lifestyle, camps, mindsets, fame, money, or whatever, but at the end of the day the simple truth is that he's just past his personal sell by date.

That said though, the usual nonsense of "he should retire" is predictable. McGregor loses to the #1 in the world. It happens. Even if he's over his own personal hill, he's still a perfectly capable fighter and he has a fair few fights left in him.

It's the fight game. Losses happen to the best and the best get old and slow down as well. Some can compete successfully in later years no doubt, but a great many just can't. We have seen it happen over and over again.

The McGregor we had is gone and I really don't think he's ever coming back at this stage. That doesn't mean he will never compete or win again though.

Think 145 only place McGregor is king. Poirier was a boy last time they fought, he matured a lot since then. Pity I was hopeful of Khabib rematch. Wonder where he goes from here? Probably super fights/spectacle fights.

Sadly, his career is starting to remind me of Mike Tyson to an extent.

He was great in his time. Confident, arrogant, KO'd everyone in front of him.

But he's at that later stage now were he is trying to make big comebacks and it's just not going to work against the in form fighters of the last few years.

I don't particularly like Dana Whitte but he is right. McGregor either gets proper hungry again or he's done.

Very happy for Dustin Poirier.

McGregor is done. Will never be champion again at 155 or 170.

Maybe has a chance at 145 but doubt he could make weight easily at this stage.

Diaz showed him up in the first match and was robbed in the second. Khabib made him look less than average. Holloway as he is now would finish him or at least get the decision.

Time to retire and concentrate on other things.....
