I started Stephen King's Billy Summers yesterday, I'm somewhere between a quarter and a third of the way through and I have to say, it's reminding me quite a bit of 11.22.63 with the whole "guy assumes a fake identity and has to try not to blow his cover while waiting to kill someone" shtick.

(And before anyone cries "spoilers", there's nothing there that you won't read on the back of either book.)
Just finished reading Billy Summers

It is essentially a hitman "one last job" thriller. The story is pretty unoriginal, but King just makes me care about the characters like no other author can. The villains are also three dimensional despite being at the same time quite clichéd. I hope he keeps writing non-horror for many more years as I can't get enough of it.

I just finished Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and I have come to the conclusion that Woolf was a genius. I have never read anything like it. What control she has over the English language, how she almost writes in melody, is absolutely amazing.

Mrs Dalloway is fantastic. I love the part where it just scrolls through the random thoughts of the different people in the street when she's out shopping. It's rare to read something so original. I struggled with The Waves and found Orlando so and so, but Mrs Dalloway is a true classic.

One chapter left of DUNE. I'm putting it off as I don't want it to end.

Last night, I finished When All Is Said by Anne Griffin and also That Place We Call Home by John Creedon. Highly recommend both.

Halfhead by Stuart MacBride.

Thriller set in a future overcrowded Glasgow where criminals are mutilated, lobotomised and put to work cleaning.

His ordinary crime novels are funnier and better plotted

Reading Dracula at the moment. Very different from what I expected. The opening section was great, very atmospheric. It's slowed down a bit but I get the feeling it's one of those books you have to view after finishing, if that makes sense?

My main recollection of reading Dracula - and it is not recent! - is of expecting it to be a rather different book to the one I encountered, probably because my view had been shaped through the prism of all the various film adaptations. So while very psychological, it seemed a lot less "horrific" than I anticipated. Not sure if I'm misremembering, I think I might put both this and Frankenstein on the re-read list for Xmas.

Just finished the Miracle of Castel di Sangro by Joe McGinnnis. Authors an American who becomes obsessed with football during the USA world cup in 94 and moves to Italy a few years later to live in a small town in the Abruzzo region where the local football team have gotten promotion to to Serie B but theres all sorts of dodgyness going on around the club, the manager and the owners with rumours of back handers to throw the last game of the season.
