The post provides a detailed personal experience and raises important questions about toilet attendants, but could benefit from a clearer structure for easier reading.

Numerous pubs and nightclubs that I have visited have an attendant in the toilet (at weekends in particular) handing out paper towels instead of allowing people to use a hand dryer or help themselves to the towels. They also have a vast selection of Eau de toilettes, deodorants, lollipops, sticks of chewing gum, etc. They rarely (if ever) quote a price for any of their services upfront or display a price list.

This has caused me and an ex-colleague to believe that the facilities are provided free of charge by the pub/club with the cost of the toiletries/lollies/gum and the attendant's pay being factored into the admission fee/the price of food and drinks sold in the pub/club.

Nevertheless, both of us gave the attendant some small change as what we believed was a polite but voluntary gesture, only to be told that we had failed to give the required minimum amount. I gave 45p only to be told that at least £1.50 was required and that my amount was "taking the piss" My ex-colleague gave 70p only for the attendant to demand he give £5.

I subsequently discovered that the vast majority of these attendants are not employed by the pub/club. I even heard of one pub owner who visited his own pub toilet to find an attendant who was setting out a stall without asking permission first.

Has anyone else come across these attendants or ever had a bad experience with these people?

Not seen one in the pubs or bars I frequent since before covid. Probably a sign of my age and the fact the village pubs don't tend to have these sort of people.

But I've seen them in pub/clubs in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling.
