Steam has just rolled out some fantastic new features that make gifting games, hardware, and gift cards a breeze! Whether you're looking to surprise a friend or simply share your favourite titles, these updates are sure to enhance your experience on the platform.

One of the standout features is the guest checkout option. Previously, this was limited to hardware and gift cards, but now you can purchase games without needing a Steam account. This means if you want to buy a game from a friend's wishlist, you can do so easily. If you're aiming for a surprise, all you need is the recipient's email address. The recipient will receive an email with all the necessary details to log into their account and redeem the gift. Just remember, their account must be in the same country as the purchase, and they need to redeem it within 30 days to avoid automatic refunds.

Another exciting addition is the ability to gift games directly across regions. Steam will handle the calculations for you, so you won't have to figure out how many gift cards you need to cover the price of a game. However, keep in mind that the recipient must be on your friends list for this feature to work.

Additionally, Steam has expanded its wishlist functionality. You no longer need to be friends with someone to gift them a game from their wishlist. Plus, you can create specific, filtered wishlists to share with family and friends, making it easier for them to know exactly what you want. When someone sends you a gift, your details will be auto-filled in the checkout cart, streamlining the process even further.

Guest checkout
In 2024, we added guest checkout, which lets a family member or friend make a gift purchase without needing to create a Steam account. This feature was limited to digital gift cards and hardware purchases at the time.

Now guest checkout can be used to buy any game on Steam.

You can send a wishlist share link to a friend or family member, and they can purchase gifts directly from that list without needing a Steam account themselves. If a guest wants to send a gift as a surprise, they can send it to any email address instead.

Gift to email
Don't know your nephew's Steam account? No problem, both digital gift cards and games can now be sent directly to email recipients. And don't worry if your nephew's email address is the same one they use for their Steam account. The email will include a link to let them sign in to their account and accept the gift.

Please note that any gift email not accepted within 30 days will be automatically refunded, so they cannot be scheduled for future delivery. The recipient of the gift must also live in the same country as the purchaser.

Cross-region gifting
Buying a gift for a friend in a higher-priced region? In the past, digital gift cards were the gifting solution, but that required you to know the full price of the game in your friend's region.

Now you can gift games directly to your friend. Steam will calculate the cost in your friend's region at checkout. Your friend needs to be on your Steam friends list to send this type of gift.
Direct from wishlist
Sending a friend or family member a link to your wishlist is a great way to help them choose a great gift for your birthday or holiday. We have made several share link improvements, including:
  • You can now send a digital gift card or gift a game directly from someone's wishlist
  • You no longer need to be friends on Steam to send gifts
  • You can create a shared wishlist link that is filtered to specific games
  • When a friend or family member clicks on your shared wishlist link, if they choose to gift you a game, the gift recipient in the cart will be pre-populated with your information.
  • And remember from above, your friend or family member can checkout as a guest, without needing to create a Steam account

Overall, these new features promise to make gifting on Steam more seamless and enjoyable. It's interesting to see these changes come at a time when discussions about game ownership are becoming more prevalent, but that's a topic for another day!

The fluctuating prices of RAM are creating complications for accurate pricing predictions of the upcoming Steam Machine. As we approach its 2026 launch, enthusiasts are engaging in speculative exercises to guess its cost. However, the current state of RAM pricing has become erratic, primarily due to an industry-wide shortage exacerbated by the demands of AI data centres.

As highlighted in a recent article, the cost of RAM has surged dramatically, with some crucial components seeing price increases of over 100% in a matter of weeks. For instance, a standard 32GB Crucial DDR5 kit jumped from £88 to £206, while certain configurations now exceed the price of high-end graphics cards. This situation puts hardware manufacturers in a precarious position; those without stockpiled RAM may struggle to produce competitively priced machines.

Valve's decision to remain tight-lipped about the Steam Machine's pricing likely stems from the unpredictability of component costs. The company may have to choose between absorbing higher costs or passing them on to consumers, which could deter potential buyers.

Ultimately, while discussions about the specs and performance of the Steam Machine continue, the volatility of RAM pricing adds an undeniable layer of uncertainty. It serves as a reminder of how external factors, like the growing AI industry, can ripple through the tech landscape and influence consumer products.

Key Points:
  • RAM prices have skyrocketed due to AI demand, complicating pricing predictions for the Steam Machine.
  • Hardware manufacturers may face challenges in maintaining production costs without stockpiled components.
  • Valve's silence on pricing may be influenced by the unpredictability of component costs.
  • The situation illustrates the broader impact of industry trends on consumer technology.

The increasing volatility of RAM prices indeed poses a significant challenge for the upcoming Steam Machine. As you've pointed out, the astronomical rise in RAM costs, particularly in the context of crucial components like DDR5, has wide-ranging implications for both manufacturers and consumers.

1. Impact on Pricing Predictions:
With the cost of a standard 32GB DDR5 RAM kit more than doubling, manufacturers are facing a conundrum. If Valve and its partners cannot accurately forecast these component costs, it creates a ripple effect throughout their pricing strategy. There's a delicate balance to strike between offering a competitively priced product and ensuring that they don't operate at a loss due to unexpected spikes in component costs.

2. Production Challenges:
Companies that may have not prepared for this surge in RAM costs are now in a tough position. Those with sufficient stockpiles will likely fare better, but manufacturers looking to enter or expand in the market without significant reserves could be hampered. They might have to decide whether to increase the price of the end product, seek alternative solutions, or even cut corners on other components to maintain a price point.

3. Valve's Strategy:
Valve's cautious approach regarding the Steam Machine's pricing makes sense given this unpredictability. By withholding information, they may be buying time to assess the market further and figure out the most feasible way to manage production costs. This strategy could also potentially allow them to gauge consumer sentiment about what would be an acceptable price range, once they finally launch the product.

4. Broader Industry Effects:
Your mention of the AI industry's demands affecting RAM prices is a crucial observation. It brings to light how interconnected various tech sectors are. The urgency behind AI development is driving up component demand and, in turn, influencing the consumer tech market. This complex interplay between industries underlines the need for consumers and manufacturers alike to stay informed about broader trends that could affect product availability and cost.

Conclusion:
Overall, while the excitement around the upcoming Steam Machine builds, the unpredictable nature of component pricing adds a layer of complexity that can't be ignored. It underscores the significance of vigilance in the tech industry and the necessity for manufacturers to adapt quickly to changing conditions. As enthusiasts, we can only hope for a stable period ahead of the launch to allow for clearer predictions on pricing and availability. Let's continue to monitor the situation and share insights, as keeping abreast of these developments will be crucial in the coming years.

So, it looks like we have some clarity on the pricing for Valve's new Steam Machine. They've just opened up randomised reservations, and the starting price for the base 512GB model is set at a hefty £879 / $1049 / €1039. If you're looking for the 2TB version, you'll need to fork out £1149 / $1349 / €1359, and if you want to add a Steam Controller to the mix, that'll bump the price up to around £1208 / $1428 / €1428.

To be honest, those prices are pretty steep, especially considering that while the Steam Machine has a sleek design, it's still a lower-end piece of tech. I had a chat with Valve's designer Lawrence Yang and engineer Yazan Aldehayyat before the launch, and they both pointed out that the current situation with component pricing is a bit of a nightmare, which they referred to as "RAMnarök."

According to them, the Steam Machine could have been up to 33% cheaper than what we're seeing now. They suggested that it might have been priced similarly to the Steam Deck OLED before its recent price hike. It's a bit disheartening to think that the Steam Machine could have been around £500, which would have made it a much more appealing option in the gaming market.

Despite the higher prices, it seems like gamers are still eager to get their hands on Valve's products. The latest batch of Steam Decks sold out quickly, even with the increased prices. This shows that there's definitely a strong demand for Valve's offerings, but it's a bit of a letdown to know that the Steam Machine could have been a more competitive option if not for those extra costs.

The first wave of Steam Machines is set to ship on June 29th, and if you're interested, you can reserve yours until June 25th. This time around, Valve is using a randomised selection process for reservations to help combat issues with bots and scalpers, which is a nice touch!

It's clear that Valve is aware that these prices might put some potential buyers off, but they seem uncertain about whether prices will drop in the future. It's a bit of a tough spot for them, and it makes you wonder how many people will actually be able to afford one of these machines.
Valve has announced a significant price hike for its Steam Deck OLED models. The increase, which amounts to nearly £200 in the UK and over 40% in various other regions, is attributed to "rising memory and storage costs."

For many fans of portable gaming, this news might come as a disappointment, especially considering the anticipation surrounding the Steam Deck since its launch. The price adjustment reflects the ongoing challenges faced by manufacturers in managing production costs. With the demand for high-quality gaming hardware on the rise, factors such as component shortages and increased material costs have inevitably impacted pricing.

While Valve has been a leader in the gaming industry with its innovative products, this change raises questions about accessibility for gamers who are looking to invest in the Steam Deck. The price increase could influence potential buyers, prompting them to reconsider their options or wait for future sales.

Here are some key points to consider regarding this price adjustment:
  • Reason for Increase: Valve cites rising memory and storage costs.
  • Impact on Prices: UK prices will rise by nearly £200, with global increases exceeding 40%.
  • Community Reaction: The announcement has prompted discussions among gamers about the affordability of high-end gaming devices.
  • Future Implications: This price change may alter the purchasing decisions of potential Steam Deck buyers.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, consumers need to stay informed about these developments. It's always a bummer when prices increase, especially for a product that has garnered so much love and attention. The Steam Deck OLED continues to be a game-changer in portable gaming, and while the new prices may deter some, it's essential to weigh the value it provides against the cost.

For those of you who are still thinking about getting a Steam Deck, what are your thoughts on the price increase?

It looks like Valve has finally put an end to the speculation surrounding the Steam Controller! They've confirmed that the new version will launch on Monday, and the price is set at £84.99. This will be welcomed by gamers who have been eagerly waiting for an upgrade to this unique controller.

Steam-Controller-in-hand_n0ga3aL.webp

However, it's worth noting that the much-anticipated Steam Machine and Steam Frame seem to be stuck in limbo due to ongoing RAM shortages. It's a bit of a shame that the other hardware launches have been delayed, but it's great to see Valve pushing ahead with the Steam Controller refresh.

What to Expect from the Steam Controller
The revamped controller is expected to come with some improvements over its predecessor. Here are a few key features to look out for:
  • Enhanced build quality for better durability
  • Improved haptic feedback for a more immersive gaming experience
  • Customisable buttons to suit different gaming styles
The decision to release the Steam Controller independently suggests that Valve is keen to keep the momentum going, even if the rest of the hardware lineup is delayed.

The return of the Steam Controller is sure to spark discussions among gamers who have been eager for its comeback. With fresh features and an updated design, it aims to cater to the evolving needs of gamers everywhere.

For those who might have missed the initial announcement six months ago, Valve's plans for hardware have always been ambitious, and it's great to see them find a way to bring this controller to market despite the hurdles.

As Valve designer Lawrence Yang explained last week, the fact the new Steam Controller contains neither RAM nor storage meant it's escaped the problems facing the company's other hardware. "And so we're announcing and shipping it now because this is when it's ready," he noted. "We didn't artificially hold it back for whatever reason. This is just how long it's taken to get everything ready from a hardware, firmware, software standpoint, as well as building up enough launch quantity and getting it to all of the warehouses around the world so that we can have a good launch quantity on ship day."

Valve's Steam Controller revival has been in development since the launch of Steam Deck OLED and was, according to Valve engineer Jeremy Slocum, borne from the team's earlier handheld work. "As we were developing the Steam Deck, a lot of the prototypes we built were very much controller like, but in a handheld form factor, that's the way we dialed in the ergonomics... And even then, we had inklings [that these] set of inputs and this kind of layout could actually make a pretty good controller design. [The controller] was always in our mind, even as we were developing the Steam Deck."

And as Steam Deck found its footing, the team "saw that people would dock [the device] and then, if they wanted to play from their couch, those inputs and those configurations that they created for their Steam deck just didn't translate" to any other controller. "It was kind of a hole in the experience that we felt like we wanted to provide", explains Slocum.

What do you all think about the Steam Controller's return?

The game director of Escape From Tarkov, Nikita Buyanov, recently outlined the anticipated updates for the game through the end of 2025. Despite the rocky start following its 1.0 launch on November 15, which was marred by server issues and a "Mixed" rating on Steam, there are exciting developments on the horizon.

In a recent update, Buyanov emphasised that Battlestate Games is committed to prioritising fixes and improvements. Players can expect:
  • A winter-themed update in Tarkov
  • New storyline quests and events
  • A special New Year TarkovTV event in December
  • The introduction of a seasonal character system, although this will arrive after the initial updates
While the seasonal character feature won't be part of the immediate updates for 2025, it hints at a vibrant future for Escape From Tarkov. Additionally, the game is set to launch on consoles and offer its first post-launch DLC, Scav Life, although these developments may not be realised until late 2026.

Overall, despite the challenges faced at launch, the roadmap suggests that Battlestate Games is dedicated to enhancing the player experience. The coming months could be pivotal for the game's community, paving the way for what might be a thrilling 2026.
Abomb

While the game retains its captivating yet punishing gameplay, it is also showing significant signs of age and technical issues.

The game remains true to its roots, offering no hand-holding for players. Newcomers are thrown into a brutal environment without guidance, which can be both thrilling and exasperating. The lack of clarity in progression systems and essential map information makes mastering the game feel like an uphill battle. A seasoned player might find beauty in its exacting design and the rewarding nature of learning through failure, but many newcomers are likely to be left frustrated.

The launch has not been smooth. Players are reporting server issues, including long wait times and frequent disconnects, compounded by the persistent problem of cheating due to the real-money trading of accounts and items. Moreover, the game's graphics and performance feel outdated, with blurry textures and poorly designed character models detracting from the immersive experience.
David76
David76
It looks like Battlestate Games has rolled out a new update for Escape from Tarkov, and there's quite a bit to unpack. Update 1.0.4.5 brings some notable improvements and tweaks that are sure to make our gaming experiences smoother and more enjoyable.

What's New?
Here's a quick rundown of the key changes:
  • The FPS limit in menus has been lifted, which should help with smoother navigation.
  • Improvements have been made to the animation system, making character movements feel more fluid.
  • The audio engine has also seen some upgrades, aimed at optimising how the game uses PC resources.
These changes are definitely going to enhance gameplay, especially with the FPS boost in menus, which can be a bit clunky at times. Plus, who doesn't love a more responsive audio experience when you're trying to sneak up on an enemy or hear that telltale sound of footsteps?

Changes
  • Improvements aimed at optimising off-raid screens;
  • Increased the FPS limit in menus and added an option to adjust it in the game settings;
  • Several changes to the animation system and audio engine to improve PC resource usage;
  • Reworked the architecture of post-raid systems to further reduce the time required to exit a raid and return to the menu;
  • As part of optimisation efforts, an updated player culling system has been implemented on Lighthouse, Shoreline, Woods, and Ground Zero. The system will be introduced to the remaining locations in future updates;
  • Implemented an iteration of the environment object and geometry optimisation for Streets of Tarkov to improve location performance;
Please note that the impact of these changes will depend on your PC configuration and in-game settings.
  • Introduced a task progression protection system in local PvE Zone raids in case of unexpected client shutdowns. If the game closes unexpectedly, task progress will now revert to the state at the start of the raid;
  • Updated the left-shoulder firing stance logic. Switching to the right shoulder will no longer happen instantly when colliding with obstacles. Instead, the weapon will continue moving for a short period without changing stance;
  • Updated the K/D display in character stats. It now counts player kills only.
Balancing changes

With this update, we introduce the second stage of weapon mod adjustments, focusing on barrels and handguards. Muzzle devices and stocks were further adjusted based on the first iteration.

Barrels follow the same principle as before. Longer barrels provide greater recoil reduction but impose higher ergonomics penalties. Changes were made to:
  • Standardise parameters and make them clearer.
  • Make the choice between short and long barrels more meaningful.
Handguards no longer reduce recoil. Their role is now to offset ergonomics penalties imposed by barrels.

Muzzle devices were further refined following the first iteration. Suppressors and their combinations with compensators now reduce ergonomics more and affect recoil less. These changes are intended to further increase the popularity of unsuppressed weapon builds. Adjustments to muzzle flash are planned for future updates.

Buttstocks received minor adjustments, mainly addressing inaccuracies and issues from the first iteration.

Base characteristics of many weapons have been updated to better align with the new balance. Recoil and ergonomics have been improved for the following:
  • All AK, AKM, and AK-100 series weapons;
  • Steyr AUG A1;
  • Steyr AUG A3;
  • HK G36;
  • HK 416A5;
  • FN SCAR-L;
  • FN SCAR-H;
  • SIG MCX-SPEAR;
  • SIG MCX .300;
  • CMMG Mk47 Mutant;
  • Rifle Dynamics RD-704;
  • Aklys Defense Velociraptor;
  • All machine guns;
  • All bolt-action and marksman rifles chambered in 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, .338, and .50 BMG.
Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where dead players and bots could appear to move visually in certain cases;
  • Fixed an issue where damage would not register after a weapon malfunction if the player had previously used a stationary weapon;
  • Fixed the cause of error 228 during trader dialogues that could block task progression;
  • Fixes to culling, shadows, textures, and location geometry;
  • Fixed an issue where armour could not be picked up if it was dropped while interacting with the modification window;
  • Fixed the incorrect behaviour of PMC bots toward player Scavs with Fence reputation 6 or higher in PvE Zone;
  • Fixed an issue preventing further progression in The Labyrinth after spawning in the room requiring a burner tool to exit;
  • Fixed the incorrect display of smoke grenades in the player's hands if another player threw a smoke grenade at them;
  • Fixed the display of changes in the "Combat Skill Levelling Boost" field in the Hall of Fame Hideout zone when one dogtag was replaced with another of a similar level;
  • Fixed an issue where PostFX settings would not display when preview was enabled;
  • Fixed an issue where some players could get stuck in the secret saferoom on Interchange without a way to exit;
  • Fixed the incorrect display of stationary weapons used by bots and multiple cases where bots could float while using them;
  • Fixed multiple issues with incorrect behaviour of loot and gear items when dropped in raid;
  • Fixed the display of current movement noise level and stance height during raids;
  • Fixed the third-person animation for inspecting your own inventory.

PC (Microsoft Windows) Liquid Swords Apr 2026
The recent announcement from Liquid Swords regarding the roadmap for their game, Samson, has garnered attention, especially following the previous update that addressed numerous bugs and crashes. The team has scheduled two more patches for April 15th and 22nd, aimed at enhancing the game's stability and overall polish.

While the details of these updates are still vague, they promise to focus on gameplay improvements and further address player feedback. The first patch has already helped lift Samson from a "Mixed" rating on Steam, indicating that there is potential for continued improvement.

For those who may not be familiar, Samson presents an intriguing, albeit rough, experience in the city of Tyndalston. The game has shown enough promise to keep players engaged, but it clearly requires additional refinement. It appears that Liquid Swords is committed to making the title the best it can be, despite acknowledging the need for more development time.

Currently, Samson is available exclusively on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, with console versions being considered for the future. As developments unfold, it will be interesting to see how the game evolves with player input and future updates.

PC (Microsoft Windows) Windrose Crew Apr 2026
In Windrose, players will assemble a crew of custom pirates, engage in ship battles, and explore the mysteries of cursed swamps. The game promises a mix of base building, "soulslite" combat, and the peculiar challenge of battling unique enemies, including a rather unexpected pink flower known as the "High Priestess."
