Resident Evil 4
Survival is just the beginning.

See how Resident Evil 4 is evolving ahead of its release on March 24th, 2023.

Resident Evil 4 joins Leon S. Kennedy six years after his hellish experiences in the biological disaster of Raccoon City. His unmatched resolve caused him to be recruited as an agent reporting directly to the president of the United States. With the experience of multiple missions on his back, Leon is dispatched to rescue the president's recently kidnapped daughter. Leon tracks her to a secluded European village, however after making first contact he discovers a fervor beyond reason grips the local populace. As a title that set the standard for the later Resident Evil franchise, the original Resident Evil 4 introduced the third-person camera to the long-running series, which has shipped over 127 million units worldwide since the first title debuted in 1996.

Now, this reimagined tale of survival in the face of overwhelming terror returns to deliver a visually stunning modern gaming experience that is true to the promise of the original release. Many team members from the production of 2019's top-selling and critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 also make their return to delve deeper into the essence of Resident Evil 4. Fans and newcomers alike can revel in both the new and familiar, as RE Engine heightens the design and creative direction of the original game.

Some new info from Game Informer (via other non-paywalled sites);
  • No QTEs, at least not in the style of the original game i.e. button mashing to onscreen prompts
  • There will be optional mini-side quests
  • Ashley will be less vulnerable - they say she will now "feel more like a natural companion and less like a second health bar to babysit"
  • Knives can break, but spares can be carried in inventory
I'll be waiting for the reviews. I got burned on RE3 remake and I'm not making that mistake again. That said, no more QTEs can only be a good thing.

I played it three times now experimenting with the different graphic settings and I still couldn't defeat the chainsaw dude. I didn't try THAT hard but I did get him with a grenade blast and 3 or 4 shotgun rounds.

Scores are pretty much what I expected, especially after playing the demo, it's brilliant.

It's terrifying….played for an hour on release. Needed to step away to calm down 🤣

This game is very tough on hardcore mode I will say. I'm struggling to decide the best optimization in terms of resolution/FPS/RT. At the moment I've switched to resolution and RT off just to see if it looks any better.

HDR seems to just make the graphics look more washed out but then again the setting is a muddy village in Spain so we can't really expect high colour graphics. Still, I'm tempted to leave it off.

Capcom has revealed that the Mercenaries' mode will be available as free DLC on April 7. As has been the case in the past, you will most likely need to have completed the game at least once to then unlock the mode.

When you play Mercenaries, your efforts will be rewarded with a rank that depends on how you perform. You'll also have an array of characters to play as with varying loadouts, and each stage of Mercenaries typically takes on a different setting with different enemies. It's good, mindless fun for when you're done with Leon and Ashley's adventure.

For those not familiar with Mercenaries, it's a game mode that's often present in Resident Evil titles, which has you facing off against a horde. The goal? To kill as many gruesome enemies as possible before they kill you, or before the timer runs out.

Been playing this. Never played the original. I don't really find it scary or tense in comparison to Village, or especially 7. Occasionally there are a few shocks and surprises but lacks the "suspense". Still a very good game so far, but I'd class it more as an action horror

Yeah, it was never that scary but there are parts later that might freak you a little.

It was more about the crazy set pieces to get the heart rate up. Whilst this remake is very good so far, it really isn't the same kind of thing with the "modern" movement. Not that I think it could go back of course (people would just complain), but in the original, the limited movement was specifically to add to the tension and act as mid-ground between what the series was and what it became. In fact, there was a whole different RE:4 build (one of a few) where there was full dual-stick movement, but it was deemed too much of a departure.

Definitely, the new modern shooting mechanics take away massively in the sense of tension and conservation of consumables.

So good playing through this again as I can hardly remember some bits of it. I'm not so keen on some parts now being off to the side though (like the emblem bit when you get the rifle, or the fishing village) as I think it changes the journey flow a bit too much.

However, all in all, I'm pleasantly surprised by how faithful the early game is, and even expanded on. This actually feels like a proper remake and not like for like stuff like Dead Space or Metroid Prime (though those are both still great updates and in the latter's case it would be nigh on impossible to reimagine the level layouts tbf).

I'm hating the magic spawning enemies though, it's just obvious and tedious. But that's a mechanic I've always disliked in games that do it, it's cheap and lazy design that the original does have but nowhere near as much (and it makes more sense, as in they are always coming from somewhere else not just dropping on your head).
