The post conveys important news but lacks detailed context about the implications of Messi's decision and the reaction from the club.

What an awful way for his time at Barcelona to come to an end though, one way or another. In my opinion, he is the greatest player ever in history not just at Barcelona, he has had 19 incredible years at the club and now all this acrimony at the end.

Pretty terrible imo from both sides.

If Messi leaves Spain it falls behind France, Germany, England and even Italy with having the best players in the world.

Messi really is the only draw left there for fans when it comes to the best players in the world.

No wonder La Liga is backing Barcelona.

If Messi stays

A lot of work being done with Barca outgoings too. Remains to be seen how they will fund the rebuild with the majority of players leaving on free transfers. Wage savings will only go so far.

There could be the bones of a decent side there too with little incomings. Need to flesh out the squad and invest in the defence though, and also put some confidence back in Dembele, Coutinho and Griezmann.

Ter Stegen
Semedo Umtitti Pique? (Firpo/Angelino?)
De Jong Pjanic
Dembele Messi Coutinho
Griezmann

The link will need translating but to summarise.

5-year contract, 3 with City, 2 with New York.

€100 million a year, €250 million bonus after 3 years when he joins New York.

You might have guessed that he would get crazy wages if he joined City but your mind couldn't have gone here.

That's... sooo much money. Like, an incomprehensibly large amount of money!!

Hopefully, he signs for Man City, I would love to see him in the Premier League but I'm fairly confident he will be playing in Spain until he retires which is a pity.

Part of me thinks that offering a 33-year-old a 5 year contract worth €700m is just insanity, but then you look at the likes of Ronaldo who is still effective at 35 (although he hasn't been able to drag Juventus to winning a Champions League). The other side of that is that Messi had his weakest season for a long time last year, he's lost a little pace, and now he'll be dropped into a more physically intense league where he's liable to get kicked around more.

My guess is that Messi will do well, will probably get about 20 goals or something, but I am not sure Man City are necessarily a shoe-in to win the CL/PL. What happens if they don't? Is Messi a failure then.

No surprise if he stays.

Looking more likely that Messi will stay at Barcelona now.

I always thought it would end up this way. New contract coming?
His dad, Jorge Messi, has released a statement in which he denies that there is a €700M release clause in Messi's contract.

The player should therefore be able to leave Barcelona as a free agent.

Lionel Messi says he will remain at Barcelona next season after performing a shock U-turn on his future.

"I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not"

"Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.

"And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700m (£624m) clause and that this is impossible."

"There was another way and it was to go to trial," he added. "I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived.

"It is the club of my life, I have made my life here. Barca gave me everything and I gave it everything. I know that it never crossed my mind to take Barca to court."
