Eily and I were out for a drink on Saturday.

Sat at an outside table, downloaded Swifty app, popped my card details in, ordered and paid for it, pint & wine arrived 2 minutes later. They've got my name, phone number, location and bank details, we got drinks. It actually felt better than standing at the bar waiting for service.
All that just puts me off going to a pub or restaurant. I went to an Ice Cream place on Saturday and was going to sit in until I realised they wanted name/number etc so I just took it back to the car. Same with food, I've only had takeaways and won't be in a restaurant until this "new normal" is over

Lockdown restrictions have been reintroduced into areas of Australia and New Zealand after positive cases were confirmed.

Today in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon was absolutely raging at Scottish football after a player from Celtic was found to have travelled to Spain for a holiday, didn't quarantine on his return and played part of a match at the weekend. This comes just days after eight Aberdeen players broke lockdown regulations by visiting a bar together - two of the players later tested positive for the virus, while six are currently self-isolating.

And everyone is watching closely as children start returning to school today and tomorrow

Further easing in England. Casinos, bowling alleys, some live entertainment, soft play etc. Fans are also allowed in to the snooker.

In Scotland, Some new restrictions in place.
  • No more than three households, with a maximum of eight people, should be meeting together indoors, whether that is a house or a pub or a restaurant.
  • The first minister warns against taking part in pub crawls. Whilst reiterating you shouldn't be going out very often.
  • No music/TV in the background in pubs or restaurants.
  • Bars and restaurants in Scotland are now required by law to collect customers' contact details.
Anyone in the UK returning from France, the Netherlands, Monaco, Turks and Caicos, Aruba or Malta will need to quatantine for 14 days.

New Zealand extends lockdown of its largest city Auckland by at least 12 days amid new cases

Are they just going to go with the status quo until cases are down to zero (which is somewhat ambitious, to say the least), or do they have a magic R-type number target that allows officials to say "stuff the measures, this will be as good as we'll get, keep calm and carry on, fingers-crossed"?

Good question. I've no idea what we're aiming for any more. New Zealand has proved that "Zero Covid" is impossible.

The restrictions can't last forever

I have a feeling Covid-19 is here to stay, much like the seasonal flu.

We did need the initial lockdown in March to allow the NHS to prepare for a worst-case scenario. Once the preparations were in place (end of April), we should have been opening society back up quite quickly for the younger age groups.

We could have essentially allowed under 50s to just get on with things and go back to normal life from May onwards.

We still would have taken an economic hit, but it would have been absolutely nowhere near the disaster we are looking at.

Listening to Nicola Sturgeon today, I get the impression that this won't be over until there are zero cases. It seems likely that just a single case in anything resembling normality will rather quickly see a return to the current figures.

Without a vaccine, which could realistically be years away, I honestly can't see a way out of considerable restrictions this year.

  • Nicola Sturgeon says that she will allow gyms and swimming pools to open from 31 August
  • However, Ms Sturgeon says that non-essential office working will not be allowed as it "presents too great a risk at this time"
As someone who works in an office and regularly goes to the gym it makes perfect sense to me.

I can do pretty much every aspect of my job from home and I'm sure a lot of others are the same. That being the case, what's the point in having folk pack on to trains and buses to sit in an office for 8-9 hours when they don't have to?

With regards to gyms, I'm sure social distancing measures will be put in place and it should be straightforward to limit numbers/implement a booking system if need be. There's also no evidence that the virus can be transmitted via sweat but, regardless, I'm sure there will be strict hygiene measures in place anyway. I'm sure Janey Janey or Gemma Gemma will clarify this.

This is the best news!!

Yes, personally we will be working at a reduced capacity to allow for social distancing and cleaning.
Bookings are already in place so that is covered - there will be no walk-ins.
Sessions will mainly be 30 minutes long, some classes maybe 45 minutes - this is to allow for a deep clean between classes/bookings.
Hand sanitizers and cleaning stations at every booth - some things like mats will be replaced every session.
You should expect one-way systems and arrows on floors just like supermarkets were.
Your gym may encourage you to change and shower at home - we are going to recommend this but the changing rooms will be available.

We are prepping and sending out letters and emails to members with a full list of guidelines - I'm sure most other gyms will doing the same.

It is good to be getting back but no-one should expect to be returning to their old routine any time soon.
