Hearing rumours tonight that Edinburgh is to be placed in Tier 3 apparently.

Wonder if Glasgow and the surrounding areas will be in Tier 4?

The Scotsman saying that Lanarkshire is under consideration for Level 4. This would be gutting but probably not surprising :(

They have just said they are still undecided whether Lanarkshire will be placed into level 4 or not. Surely this should have been decided by now as the difference between levels 3 and 4 could be huge for a lot of businesses.

No areas of Scotland are to be placed in the highest level of the country's new five-tier coronavirus restrictions system, which begins with Level 0.

The Scottish government had been considering putting both North and South Lanarkshire in Level 4 but has not done so.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Level 4 would be used "when transmission is extremely high and risks the capacity of the NHS to cope".

The first minister says the following areas will be in Level 2:
  • Aberdeenshire
  • Aberdeen
  • Fife
  • The Borders
  • Dumfries and Galloway
  • Argyll & Bute
  • Perth & Kinross
  • Angus
While those in Level 3 are as follows:
  • Inverclyde
  • East and West Dunbartonshire
  • Dundee
  • Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire
  • The City of Glasgow
  • South Ayrshire
  • East Ayrshire
  • North Ayrshire;
  • Stirling
  • Falkirk
  • Clackmannanshire
  • The City of Edinburgh
  • Midlothian
  • West Lothian
  • North and South Lanarkshire
  • East Lothian

The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if there is a national lockdown in a few weeks. Countries around Europe are shutting down as the virus rates increase and the UK is 3 or 4 weeks behind them.

According to The Times, a national lockdown is being considered for England.....possibly as early as next Wednesday.
Just been officially announced. If parliament approves England will be in lockdown from next Thursday (5th Nov) until 2nd December. Schools will remain open though as will things like construction and manufacturing industries.

I wonder how long it will be before the Scottish Government consider something similar?

Nicola Sturgeon has said that they are looking for details on the furlough extension, asking if it's flexible or if it's a hard stop at the end of November.

If it's a hard stop, and I'm sure that's what she'll be told, then I can see North and South Lanarkshire and Glasgow being moved to Tier 4 very soon. Maybe the whole of the Central Belt.

If covid rules force temporary business closures anywhere in the UK, the same furlough payments and assistance should apply. Seems obvious. Either that or allow the devolved powers borrowing rights so they can fund it themselves.

Localised restrictions are far better options at this stage, in my opinion. Even if it means the entire mainland is tier 4, there is no need to have islands lumped in with the rest of us. The goal here should be to allow people to live under as few restrictions as possible without putting undue strain on the health service.
