Bill Belichick is still the head coach in New England but the Atlanta Falcons are a team to watch if Belichick is available. They are interested, per league sources.

The Jets are expected to make some coaching staff changes, though nothing significant, according to a Jets team source. All three coordinators — Nathaniel Hackett, Jeff Ulbrich, Brant Boyer — will return. Heading into this weekend, the expectation was that passing game coordinator Todd Downing and offensive line coach/run game coordinator Keith Carter would both return, too.

It is important to note that in past years, some Jets coaching decisions didn't come until after players conducted their exit interviews and expressed their opinions to key Jets decision-makers. That impacted offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur's case to be retained last year before he and the Jets ultimately parted ways.

It's unclear where exactly the Jets will make changes, though it seems like a safe bet the offensive coaching staff could be in line for some alterations. That's what happens when a team finishes last in the NFL in yardage, 29th in scoring, 30th in passing yards, last in red-zone efficiency and last in third-down conversions.

Ulbrich, the defensive coordinator, should get some looks as a head coach candidate. Keep an eye on defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel as a defensive coordinator candidate elsewhere, too.

Not surprised at the Ron Rivera firing but not sure what they were expecting with that squad of players. He was on a hiding to nothing with that team.

The Washington Commanders have requested permission to interview Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris and Baltimore Ravens associate head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, according to reports from NFL Network and ESPN.

Formal meetings with head-coaching candidates cannot begin until Jan. 22, though video conference calls are permissible.

EPSN has also reported that the Commanders have requested an interview with 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters about the GM position in Washington.

The Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Mike Vrabel, a team source said. Just six weeks ago, owner Amy Adams Strunk had plans for Vrabel to be part of the organization for years to come, believing they had a top NFL coach. Recently, ownership changed its mind.

Vrabel, 48, finished the 2023 season with a 6-11 record, his worst mark during his Titans tenure. It's the second straight year Tennessee finished with a losing record and missed the postseason.

The former Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots linebacker found plenty of success during his first four seasons as the Titans' coach. He went 41-24 in the regular season and 2-3 in the postseason from 2018 to 2021. But a 13-21 record over the last two seasons led to Vrabel's departure.

The Titans' offense has fallen off the past two seasons with the unit ranking near the bottom of the league in yards and points. Tennessee has used Ryan Tannehill, Malik Willis and Will Levis as its starting quarterbacks during the last two years.

The franchise is now looking to hire its sixth coach since moving from Houston to Tennessee.

Wow, not a Titans fan per se, but they were always a team I appreciated and enjoyed watching, largely due to Henry and their scrappy play which seemed to emanate from Vrabel. Always respected him.

Pete Carroll is out as Seattle Seahawks head coach and will remain in the organization as an adviser, the team said Wednesday.

Carroll, 72, was 137-89-1 in 14 seasons with the Seahawks, winning one Super Bowl.

"After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from head coach to remain with the organization as an adviser," Seahawks owner Jody Allen said. "Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title, and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community. His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward. Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family."

Pete says he competed hard in recent meetings with ownership to continue to be the head coach, but ultimately agreed with ownership that it "made sense" for the team to continue on without him as HC.

John Schneider will take over.

Did not expect this given it was another winning season. Feel like it's probably for the best but glad he's sticking around as an advisor.

Bill Belichick is out as New England Patriots coach after 24 seasons with the franchise, team sources confirmed, a massive shakeup between a coach and franchise that for so long were synonymous with success.

The move came after New England finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record, their worst season since 1992, and the third time in four years the Patriots have finished with a losing record. ESPN first reported the news.

Owner Robert Kraft and Belichick met multiple times since the season ended. Their meetings were cordial and professional, but they chose to go in different directions.

Still, Belichick is unarguably one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, guiding quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots dynasty to six Super Bowl victories and ranking second all-time in wins (including playoffs) among head coaches with his 333, which trails only Don Shula (347). New England posted a winning record in 20 of his 24 seasons with the team.

But in the four years since Brady departed, the Patriots are 29-38 with one playoff appearance and no postseason wins. New England started this season 2-10, losers of five straight at one point, and finished the season averaging just 13.9 points per game, tied for the fewest in the NFL.
