Vic Fangio leaving the Dolphins. Just when he seemed to be getting a decent defense there too.

The Miami Dolphins and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced Wednesday.

"I want to thank Vic for his contributions in 2023," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. "When we assessed the season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved. Now, we turn our focus to 2024 and beyond with urgency as we identify the best candidate to lead our defense moving forward. We remain steadfastly committed to the development of our players and to building a winning team with sustained success."

Fangio spent one year as Miami's defensive coordinator this season after three years as the head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2019 to 2021. The Dolphins went 11-6 during the regular season before losing 26-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC wild-card game on Jan. 13.

This is unexpected. I thought the defense did really well given all the injuries, especially towards the end of the season, and even ended the regular season at #10 in YPG allowed

The Chargers are interviewing former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel in Los Angeles today regarding their head-coaching job, according to league sources.

It's Vrabel's first known interview since the Titans fired him last week after six seasons in Nashville. Vrabel, 48, finished the 2023 season with a 6-11 record, his worst mark during his tenure with Tennessee. It marked the second straight year the franchise finished with a losing record and missed the postseason.

NFL Network first reported the news.

Vrabel is also set to interview with the Atlanta Falcons next week and the Seattle Seahawks are looking to schedule one, league sources said.
Mike Vrabel will meet with the Carolina Panthers for their head-coaching vacancy Thursday morning, a league source said.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard confirmed in his season-ending news conference that defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will return for a third year in Indianapolis, despite the Colts ranking 28th in points allowed per game for the second straight year.

However, there will be other changes to the coaching staff.

Defensive line coach Nate Ollie and assistant defensive backs coach Mike Mitchell will not return to Indy next season, a league source confirmed Wednesday. Both assistants were hired alongside Bradley ahead of the 2022 season and spent two years with the franchise.

Ollie's departure is particularly surprising since the Colts set an Indianapolis-era single-season franchise record with 51 sacks in 2023. The Colts had four players with at least eight sacks, and defensive end Samson Ebukam paced them all with 9 1/2.

IndyStar was first to report the news of the coaching changes.

The Atlanta Falcons completed a second interview with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for their head-coaching vacancy, they said.

League sources also confirm Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales is interviewing in person with the Panthers today.

And Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris doing the same.

Joe Barry will not return as Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator, a source familiar with the decision confirmed.

Barry's status was a hot topic throughout the 2023 season, particularly after back-to-back losses to the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Weeks 14 and 15.

The Packers' defense improved following that stretch, and the team clinched a playoff berth after finishing the season with three straight wins. The unit stifled the Dallas Cowboys in a wild-card round upset and had what Packers coach Matt LaFleur called a "fantastic" defensive performance against the San Francisco 49ers.

Two days after the 24-21 divisional-round loss to the top-seed 49ers, LaFleur was asked about the status of Barry, whose contract was not set to expire this offseason.

"I know there's going to be a lot of long-term, big-picture questions. I'm not there yet, fellas," LaFleur said. "We're just starting the process. I gave everybody off yesterday. I came in yesterday and watched the tape, all three phases, but we're just getting into the evaluation portion right now. So probably not going to have many answers for you guys. Haven't met with any of our coaches yet. That'll start this afternoon. Certainly meet with the coordinators and then go down with all the position coaches."

The Las Vegas Raiders are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco for the same role, team and league sources confirmed.

The Raiders appeared locked in on interim GM Champ Kelly and Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds last week, but got cold feet about pairing a first-time GM with first-time head coach Antonio Pierce.

Telesco, 51, spent 11 years as Chargers GM until his firing in December.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have new coordinators on both sides of the ball in 2024 with offensive coordinator Brian Johnson not returning next season, a league source said. This comes as a major shuffle for coach Nick Sirianni after firing defensive coordinator Sean Desai on Sunday.

All of this happened days after Sirianni was scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie following the disastrous finish of what was once a promising season.

Significant staff changes were expected after Sirianni's Eagles failed to follow through on a 10-1 start that unraveled into a 1-6 finish, including a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Monday's NFC wild-card game. Desai was relieved of his play-calling duties on Dec. 17 and replaced by senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia.

The Eagles ranked seventh in scoring this season averaging 25.5 points per game. That's down from ranking second last year at 28.1 points per game. But Philadelphia struggled late in the season averaging only 18.9 points per game in its last seven contests.

Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman called several coaches and agents last week to compile a list of candidates to present Lurie as part of a plan to overhaul the staff in a fourth year under Sirianni.

This overhaul comes nearly a year after another mass overhaul, but that one involved promotions. After last season ended, offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon landed head coaching jobs with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals.

The Tennessee Titans are hiring Brian Callahan as their next coach, a team source said. Callahan joins the Titans after spending the past five years as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator.

Callahan was in Nashville for a second interview Monday and the Titans, who saw him as their top coaching target, made sure to work towards an agreement before he left.

Callahan joined Zac Taylor in Cincinnati and has helped rebuild the Bengals from a cellar-dwelling team to one that has put together three consecutive winning seasons and reached Super Bowl LVI.

The Atlanta Falcons plan to hire Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as the team's head coach, according to team sources.

Atlanta seemed like a destination for former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick after he interviewed for the job. But the Falcons are bringing Morris back to the division he previously served in as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach from 2009 to 2011 and on Atlanta's staff from 2015 to 2020.

The Falcons fired Arthur Smith right after the 2023 season ended, when the team finished 7-10.

Morris, 47, doesn't bring a great resume to the process. He was 17-31 in three seasons with the Buccaneers, which is worse than the record that got Smith fired (21-30), and he was 4-7 as the Falcons interim head coach after Dan Quinn was fired in 2020.

What Morris does have is some experience, a glowing recommendation from his current boss (Rams coach Sean McVay) and a positive relationship with many people still around Atlanta's organization.
