There are two head coach positions still to be filled, the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks, Bill Belichick hasn't interviewed for either position. He is currently viewed as a long shot for the Commanders and Seahawks coaching vacancies, league sources said. It'd take a change of direction for something to happen with either team.

Only two head-coaching jobs remain open after the news Atlanta plans to hire Raheem Morris.

The Carolina Panthers are closing in on a deal to hire Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their coach, a league source said.

Canales, 42, guided Tampa Bay's offense to a strong season working with quarterback Baker Mayfield after being the Bucs' play-caller for one season. This completes the Panthers' primary on-field braintrust after the firings of coach Frank Reich and general manager Scott Fitterer.

Canales and new Panthers general manager Dan Morgan worked together with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2017. Canales served as the wide receivers coach while Morgan worked in the scouting department.

Canales joined the Buccaneers for the 2023 season after spending the past 13 seasons with the Seahawks (2010-22), serving numerous roles: offensive quality control coach (2010-12) before being elevated to assistant quarterbacks coach (2013-14) and later wide receivers coach (2015-17), quarterbacks coach (2018-19, 2022) and pass game coordinator (2020-21).

The Philadelphia Eagles are hiring veteran coach Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. The move comes one day after Fangio left the same position with the Miami Dolphins.

Fangio spent one year as Miami's defensive coordinator this season after coaching the Denver Broncos for three seasons (2019-21). The Dolphins went 11-6 during the regular season before losing 26-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC wild-card game.

Earlier this offseason, the Eagles fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai after being relieved of his play-calling duties on Dec. 17. It happened days after coach Nick Sirianni was scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie following the disastrous finish of what was once a promising season.

Jim Harbaugh is the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

"Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward," owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. "The son of a coach, brother of a coach, and father of a coach who himself was coached by names like Schembechler and Ditka, for the past two decades Jim has led hundreds of men to success everywhere he's been — as their coach. And today, Jim Harbaugh returns to the Chargers, this time as our coach. Who has it better than us?"

This is good for the Chargers, Harbaugh, and probably for Michigan as well.

Fascinating appointment. Will be interesting to see what Harbaugh does, will he be looking at a total rebuild where the likes of Allen and Bosa are moved on or will be keep the veterans and build around them?

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to hire Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their successor to Pete Carroll, league sources said Wednesday.

Macdonald, 36, will become the ninth head coach in franchise history and the youngest head coach in the NFL, passing recently hired New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, 37.

Macdonald spent the last two seasons running the Ravens' defense, which finished the 2023 regular season ranked first in scoring and fourth in yards allowed. Baltimore ranked eighth and 12th in those categories in 2022.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hiring former Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith as the team's new offensive coordinator, according to a team source. Smith will land a new job after the Falcons fired him shortly after the end of the 2023 regular season.

Even though Smith is an outside hire, he had numerous connections to the Steelers. He began his NFL coaching journey in Tennessee, where he worked with Mike Munchak, Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey, who all were assistant coaches for the Steelers earlier in their careers.

Additionally, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in his end-of-season news conference he wanted an experienced play-caller. Smith checks that box as well. After Matt LaFleur left for the Green Bay Packers head coaching job in January 2019, Smith was promoted to offensive coordinator. Behind Derrick Henry, the Titans boasted the league's third-best rushing attack (138.9 yards per game) and the 10th-best scoring offense (23.3 points per game) in 2019. The results were better in 2020. The Titans ranked rushing offense, averaging 168 yards per game. They also averaged the fourth-most points (30.7) with Ryan Tannehill behind center.

Tomlin fired previous offensive coordinator Matt Canada during the season, giving quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan play-calling duties and tabbing running backs coach Eddie Faulkner to coordinate the offense during the week. While the change sparked the sluggish offense, Tomlin said neither Sullivan nor Faulkner would be considered for the full-time position.
