What's the general feeling for how the counter offensive is going ?

I'm reading a lot of very different takes all over the place, is it too early to say anything for sure?

Woke up this morning to reports of it all kicking off between Wagner and the Russian military leaders.

The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group has vowed to "go all the way" to topple Russia's military leadership, hours after the Kremlin accused him of "armed rebellion".

Yevgeny Prigozhin said his Wagner fighters had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia, entering the city of Rostov-on-Don.

Mr Prigozhin said his men would destroy anyone who stood in their way.

Putin apparently going to give an address accusing Prigozhin of treason and mutiny.

What do we know so far about the Wagner rebellion?

The paramilitary advance up the M4 towards Moscow has unfolded at breakneck speed today so if you're just joining us, here is a quick recap of what we know so far.
  • In an escalation of Yevgeny Prigozhin's verbal assaults on the Russian defence ministry, he called for a "march of justice" aimed at toppling top military brass late yesterday;
  • Russia's security service responded by opening a criminal case against Mr Prigozhin;
  • Wagner fighters entered the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and very likely captured its military headquarters, according to British military intelligence
  • This command centre coordinates the whole military operation in Ukraine and Prigozhin claims it was captured "without firing a single shot";
  • Wagner then took control of all military facilities in the city of Voronezh, a Russian security source told Reuters;
  • In a public address, Vladimir Putin accused Prigozhin of treason and promised to crush the "armed mutiny" - a move backed by the Chechen forces;
  • Officials in the next city north of Voronezh en route to Moscow - Lipetsk - urged citizens to stay indoors, as reports suggested Wagner was continuing up the M4 highway;
  • Russian military helicopters opened fire on a convoy of rebel mercenaries.
Let's say Prigozhin's coup is successful and he takes control of the country, would he be any better than Putin or worse? Guessing it's the latter, based on his track record of brutalism, warmongering, and propaganda?

Sky reporting that the Wagner group has agreed to stop the movement towards Moscow?

Well this has ended just as quickly as it begun.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was all staged. How does Putin trust a word Prigozhin says and vice versa, unless this is all a stunt which is very possible of course

I don't get this, from either end.

Surely Putin can't just go back to trusting him to carry out his orders after he marched his army to Moscow?

Equally, regardless of what assurances he's received, surely he can't believe that Putin won't have him killed at the earliest possible opportunity.

I don't see how either side is supposed to go back to cooperating after this.

This last 12 hours have been surreal. If this just dies down in nothing its insane.

This all seems very strange to me, I wouldn't be surprised if it is all staged and they are trying to catch Ukraine and the West out by making them commit because they think Russia has been weakened but instead are being lured into a trap.

Hope I'm wrong but time will tell.

Former head of the British Army General Dannatt transcript from Sky News on the Guardian live update:

"Apparently he's left the stage to go to Belarus but is that the end of Prigozhin and the Wagner Group? The fact that he's gone to Belarus is I think a matter of some concern.

"What we don't know, what we will discover in the next hours and days is... how many of his fighters have actually gone with him.

"If he has gone to Belarus and has kept an effective fighting force around him, he then presents a threat again to the Ukrainian flank closest to Kyiv which is where all this began on February 24 last year.

"Although it would appear that this matter is closed I think it is far from closed and the aftershocks will reverberate for quite some time.

"They (Ukraine) need to watch that flank very carefully and make sure they have got some manoeuvre units such that they could repel a renewed attack from the direction of Belarus."

From lots of talking heads on Twitter, it seems that Ukraine are getting ready to commit its armoured fist to the south. If that's true and that the Russian mobile reserves are already committed it could be a real shock and awe moment. I wish they had all the weapons they need for this, especially air dominance, but the progress south is amazing considering they are using NATO tactics of combined arms but without air superiority, something that far too many of the media talking heads seem to gloss over when they complain about the speed of the counter-offensive.
