Putin has been talking in China

Asked by the small group of reporters if the war in Ukraine is close to ending, Vladimir Putin tells journalists in Beijing that there is "light at the end of the tunnel".

"I believe that, if common sense is there, it is possible to agree an acceptable option or acceptable way of ending this conflict," he says.

"We see also that the current administration of the US has the will and desire to find this solution.

"I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We will see. Otherwise, we will be forced to resolve all our objectives through military means."

On the battlefield, Putin says Russian forces are advancing "on all fronts" in Ukraine.

He says Ukraine is "not capable" of launching large-scale offensives and says it is now trying to plug holes by regrouping its forces.

"We shouldn't be relaxed now, maybe they're preparing some reserves, some actions, large-scale events, but preliminary analysis from our military experts says the military of Ukraine does not have this capability."

When asked whether he is willing to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He says he is, so long as the meeting is "well prepared" - a line we've heard from Kremlin officials in recent weeks that is likely designed to delay any talks.

The Russian leader asked rhetorically whether there was "any sense" in meeting with Zelenskyy, but continued to say he had told Donald Trump he was happy to meet him in Russia.

"I've never refused to do that, if it leads to positive outcomes," he said.

"And by the way, Donald asked me if it was possible and said it was possible. I said, let him come to Moscow."

Both Putin and Lavrov have made knowingly unacceptable proposals over the past few days, including that Ukraine remain neutral after the war, giving up its territories, and now this offer for Zelenskyy to come to Moscow. It is all bullshit, but they are trying to press the right buttons with Trump, knowing that he may well flip again. Putin also seems buoyed by his visit to China and mingling with many of the other leaders who don't care for the West or America.

Ukraine, Europe, and all their allies need to remain strong and deliver concrete steps instead of just talking.

Another meeting today of the so-called Coalition of the Willing to discuss specifics of security guarantees for Ukraine. I won't say all this talk is pointless, but they need to come up with a way to end the war - Putin isn't interested in a ceasefire or making concessions (especially after his meeting in China) and will continue to run rings around Trump and dismiss everything that is suggested.

Sad to say, but this has been Putin's "best" week since he started the invasion back in 2022.

He received a mini boost when he met Trump a few weeks ago, which set in motion a series of events that culminated in China, where he gained the full support of both China and North Korea.

Now he is issuing ominous warnings to stymie robust security guarantees for Ukraine, knowing Washington and Europe are divided.

His latest intervention on the issue of foreign troops in Ukraine shows how masterfully he has hijacked the diplomatic efforts. Analysts now agree he seems to have hoodwinked President Trump and team in Alaska on the whole question of security guarantees.

823 UAV/missiles were being reported last night. Lots of civilian casualties from the looks of things :(

Hopefully, this is the extent of their stockpiling, and we won't see an extended period with these numbers. It's not helping their war effort, though, regardless.

Donald Trump has said he is ready to move to a second stage of sanctioning Russia over its conflict with Ukraine.

The US president has expressed growing frustration with Moscow since he met Putin last month, but has so far resisted imposing tougher sanctions on Russia.

It comes as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier that additional economic pressure by the United States and Europe could prompt Putin to enter peace talks with Ukraine

Donald Trump said last night that individual European leaders would visit the US today or tomorrow to discuss how to resolve the war.

Speaking to reporters after returning from the US Open in New York, Trump also said he would speak to Vladimir Putin soon.

"Certain European leaders are coming over to our country on Monday or Tuesday individually," Trump said.

Also, last night, the US envoy to Ukraine has said Russia's latest strike on Kyiv does not suggest Moscow wants a diplomatic end to the war.

"Russia appears to be escalating with the largest attack of the war, hitting offices of the UKR Cabinet in Kyiv," Keith Kellogg wrote on X.

"The attack was not a signal that Russia wants to diplomatically end this war."

This could be a crucial week if Trump actually carries through with his threats to collapse the Russian economy.

NATO article 4 has been activated by Poland.

Donald Tusk says Poland is closer to armed conflict than at any time since the Second World War.

"I have no reason to claim we're on the brink of war, but a line has been crossed, and it's incomparably more dangerous than before," he says.

"This situation brings us the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two".

He adds that Warsaw has asked to invoke NATO Article 4 and that the country needs more than expressions of solidarity.

"The fact that these drones, which posed a security threat, were shot down changes the political situation. Therefore, allied consultations took the form of a formal request to activate Article 4 of the NATO Treaty," Tusk says.

Article 4 allows any NATO member to bring an issue forward for discussion within the bloc. It is not a military response.

Tusk also says there were 19 "intrusions" into Poland's airspace overnight, with four drones shot down.

A large number of the drones flew in from Belarus, he says.
